WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I’ve always battled with my weight as soon as I hit puberty. Before then I was so skinny, friends used to call me chicken legs. But when I entered middle school and a cafeteria was at my disposal, my relationship with food seemed to change. Fast forward to high school, and while i was a big girl, i certainly had a little fluff to share. Things definitely changed when i went to university and over 4 years i gained 40 lbs. By my fourth year, I would cry in change rooms because nothing fit and while all my roommates were wearing great skirts and tops to go dancing, i always had to wear something that hid my tummy.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
After the birth of my daughter, i never lost the initial baby weight, and then when i got pregnant with my twins 2.5 years later, the weight started to pile on. When i went in for my c section i was 275 l bs. A year after they were born i was still 220 lbs. When my husband wanted to take the kids to the park or out to play, i would make excuses that i had things to do in the house, just so i wouldn’t have to go to the park. I didn’t want to chase after the kids because i was tired, and i didn’t want everyone at the park to see “that fat mom” try and play with her kids. I was quickly missing out on special moments in my kids’ lives and i was incredibly sad. I had no pictures with them and was always behind the camera.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
My turning point was when my mom told me that my dad was concerned. My dad is a man who “mostly” keeps his opinions to himself. So for him to verbalize his concern to my mother, I know that things had gotten out of hand.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I found a woman online who had a similar story. She ended up being a beachbody coach and within a month, i had ordered a fitness program and cleaned up my eating.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
In the initial 4 months i lost 30 lbs. I was doing a pilates/yoga based program and my husband agreed to do it with me so that i had support. I also had the support of an online community that gave me accountability.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I hated to exercise, it was painful to trudge down to our basement after the kids were in bed. I was exhausted after watching all three of them during the day. But having my husband do it with me was the kick in the pants I needed.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
A few months into the program, the woman who was my online coach, took a step back and took time for her family and i was without support. While i didn’t gain any weight, i certainly had stopped working out. I later found out my neighbour was also an online beachbody coach and signed up with him, which was the other kick in the pants I needed to get going again.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I hit a plateau when i was between coaches, and getting a new program to “shake things up” is what got me going again.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost my initial 30 lbs in four months, then took a break and then between August 2015 and October 2015 i lost the remaining 40 lbs.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Non scale victories are endless! i’ve no participate in five 5km races, a 10km mud run, i run around with my kids at the park, i’m more outgoing, I have more friends and i’m not afraid to ‘get out there’
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Today, i eat a clean diet. Nothing refined or pre packaged. We limit the times we dine out at a restaurant. Whereas before I would make a whopping plate of pasta for myself for lunch smoothered in cheese and cream sauce “just because” i was home and i could. I used to keep snacks in my desk like candy and chips.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When i was heavier, i was sedentary. I used to walk my daughter to school and that was it. Now I hit 10,000 steps a day as well as 30 minutes of exercise that gets my blood pumped and leaves me a sweaty mess
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Food is the number one reason we are overweight. If you can get over that hurdle of emotional eating, it will made the difference you need. It’s 80% food and 20% exercise
- Surround yourself with people who are willing to support you, if not, the negative people in your life will drag you down. Your vibe attracts your tribe.
- Find a partner to do whatever program you are doing.
- Plan our your meals. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
- Never give up. It doesn’t have to be perfect! It’s life and stuff happens. If you slip up, don’t give up on the day or think “i’ll start again monday”. Pick up your big girl pants and keep going!
