WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I was 11 years old and a highly insecure, very anxious young girl. Who had hit puberty early and was 5 foot 11 at that age and so unsure of her body she would stare at it daily in the mirror questioning why she didn’t look like her friends. She found comfort in sneaking foods and then purging them from her body because of the guilt and shame. This lasted many years.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
It affected my social life, my love life, my teenage years, my ability to feel comfortable in my own skin. I felt so ostracised from my friends because I couldn’t wear the same clothes, I felt isolated and alone even though I was accepted by my peers. I was severally depressed and suicidal for 10 years. I attempted suicide multiple times from the ages of 16-20. I had zero confidence, no self love and hated myself. I had experianced a horrible eating disorder; bulimia which then developed into a binge eating disorder. I ended up begging my parents for a lapband that caused me more problems than I can count and got the band unfilled when I was 21 before I started this weight loss journey.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
My parents finally sat me down and did a mini intervention on me at 22 years old and were distraught that either I would die of a heart attack before I was 30 or I would kill myself intentionally. They sent me to a weightloss retreat which kicked started my new life and motivated me. I was there for a few weeks.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I went to a weightloss retreat for a few weeks for a mental and physical detox. I then came home and started eating cleaner and exercising. I lost 55lbs (25kgs) in 5 months and was happy maintaining that weight for about a year. I felt confident and was still a bigger girl but I wasn’t too concerned. I then decided after beginning shift work as a new graduate registered nurse that I wanted to challenge myself further after feeling my body wasn’t where i wanted it to be. I started 12wbt and have lost another 60lbs (27.5kgs) in 5 months. So in total a loss of 115lbs (52.5kgs).
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
It was quite immediate, my body was changing a lot but it wasn’t until the last 30 lbs of my weightloss that I’ve really felt and seen the differences in my mental state and my body. The mind takes so long to catch up with everything and such extreme loses in weight can really take a while to adjust to.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I had to overcome my emotional connection with food, a vicious cycle of binge eating and bulimia and my inability to understand moderation. I was your classic all or nothing girl and it’s taken me 2 years to change this side of myself. I’ve finally managed to figure out how to have moderation and have that relationship with food, exercise and my general health.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I did, it’s hard!! the weeks you don’t see results or your negative self talk catches up with you. You have to find your inner fire and find what makes you go. You have to remember why you started this journey. To be healthier, beat your blood pressure, a goal dress, a happier sense of self. Don’t lose focus or sight on your goals.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I’m currently in a plateau! the last few pounds are always the last to lose as they say! I’m finding myself working towards increased workouts and tailoring my diet. I’m also working on being kinder to myself and accepting this stage is going to be slower. It’s a marathon not a sprint!
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
The total time of actively trying to lose weight was around 1 year total. But it’s been over a 2 year period of combined maintainence and actively losing weight.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I can fit into a (Aus) size 14 skinny jean which I never thought possible! I can run 7 miles (12km) which I never thought I would WANT TO DO, let alone ENJOY! I ran my first 5km fun run. I did a hike I would’ve never dreamed I would finish. I went camping for the first time. Every day is a non scale victory in my life now because I’m actually living. I’m a healthy, happy 24 year old woman. My whole life feels like a non scale victory!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My daily diet involves eating 5-6 regular meals. 3 larger and 3 smaller, I don’t fear carbohydrates, dessert or calories. My old diet consisted of skipping breakfast to save calories, bingeing by the afternoon on everything in site (think whole cheesecakes, whole pizzas, blocks of chocolate and packets of chips). Then either restricting the whole next day by not eating or attempting to purge the same day. Or I was either on a no carb diet, all protein, no sugar. I was always leaving something out or depriving myself: there was good and bad foods. It’s a total turn around. No food is off limits I am just much more aware of what’s going into my body and that food is fuel.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I now run 2 times a week and do weights 3-4 days a week. I didn’t do anything at my heaviest because I had no energy. I might’ve had a burst of motivation one day every two weeks where I would go for a walk or the gym but it was always half lived and half arsed.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Every time you feel yourself wanting to order take out, put that money in a jar and make the healthier choice of a home cooked meal with the ingredients you have planned. At the end of a few months look in the jar and buy something nice.
- Don’t deprive yourself but don’t treat yourself with food as a reward. Find the balance between food is your friend and food is fuel.
- Keep your nutrition on point but learn new recipes and healthify your old favourites. Always look to try new things! Im all up for some “fakeaway”
- Exercise – it doesn’t have to be a marathon run, a massive weights class or difficult. Start small and find things you enjoy.
- Gather up the support of your loved ones and be honest with them about your journey, get them involved. It keeps you accountable and will change the dynamic of your relationship.
