WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY? I have been a yo-yo dieter for my whole teenage and adult life, but it was my cervical cancer diagnoses at age 37 in 2011 that made me really think about what I am doing to myself. I did not “fit” into the C-scan machine for the planning stage of my radiation treatment and had to go to another hospital that had a bigger one. I felt embarrassed and humiliated and knew that I need to address my weight issues. Once I have gone through chemo and radiation treatment and got the all clear, I started my weightloss journey.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I joined an online weightloss programme in South Africa
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS? In about two months’ I could see a difference
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART? Trying to keep myself accountable was the biggest challenge, and in the beginnning I did not like exercise at all
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? Yes, after 85 lbs lost people started saying that I look fine and should not loose more, I was not at goal weight yet, and started slowly gaining weight again. When I decided to create my instagram account to keep me motivated and on track I wanted to reach goal more than ever before. I have NEVER reached goal weight on any diet, but this time I used other instagrammers as inspiration to continue.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? Yes, just kept on staying on plan and exercising. If I did not cheat while plateauing, it did not bother me too much.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT? About 2 years all in all
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES? Yes, loads! The normal day to day things like fitting into smaller clothes, not worrying about breaking plastic chairs, not worrying that the lifting apparatus of the hair dressing chair would not lift me. Just did a zipline activity while on holiday that was crazy fun!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I eat regular meals now and snack on fruit. I eat very little unhealthy carbs like white bread and my weekends used to be spent eating bags of crips and sweets.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Much more active now.

- Set small goals if you have a lot to loose
- Plan meals
- Follow many positive weightloss and exercise accounts to keep you inspired
- Never let a cheat meal become a cheat day or week
- Take lots and lots of progress photos to keep you inspired if you have times that the scales do not move.
