WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?

I’ve always been the heavier girl. I look back at pictures of when I was as young as 5 years old and I was heavier than the other kids.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I felt self conscious everywhere I went, every time I would hear people laughing, I would assume they were laughing at how big I was. I could barely walk up a flight of stairs or walk a short distance without being out of breath. I was sick all the time, having pre-diabetic symptoms, chest pains constantly, I was putting my body through hell. I could barely fit into a booth at any restaurant, which was fine because I didn’t like being seen in public eating anyway. I started ordering take out food 5 days a week and it got even worse from there.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I went to the doctor’s office one day and they weighed me. At my local doctor’s office, the area where they weigh patients is an open space right next to the waiting room. The nurse proceeded to weigh me and exclaimed; “that does say 290lbs right there, is that correct?”. I was mortified. At the number, the fact that everyone had heard and at how far it had gone. That day, I decided to make changes.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I cut out quite a few things from my diet, all the junk food and processed junk. Then I started exercising and working out regularly.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
About 6 months later, I went to the doctor’s office again and got weighed at 45lbs less.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I had to push myself to change my eating habits. It seemed so much easier to eat the quick and processed stuff. I forced myself to cook more at home and to go for walks daily. I was exhausted but I never gave up.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Yes. The positive comments from strangers and friends, people asking me if I had lost weight. Once you see results, it becomes an addiction to want to better yourself.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes. I tweaked my diet and workout plans a little and it worked every time.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I hit the 100lbs lost after 1 year.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Fitting into clothes I had bought but could never wear, being able to go places without feeling self conscious about people looking at me and also being able to fit into “regular”, non plus sized clothing.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Right now I live a ketogenic lifestyle. I used to eat takeaway food 5 days a week and fill up on fried foods and fast food. I work in a fast food restaurant, I would eat there daily. I have not touched a single piece of food from there in over a year (not even a single french fry!).

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My workouts have improved, I have so much more endurance and strength. I can walk longer distances and my walks are more enjoyable.
