WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I’ve struggled with food my entire life. With a childhood filled with nothing but bad memories, food was always there for me. Regardless of if I was sad, mad, or even in a good mood – food was always there!
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
At my heaviest, I was completely miserable. I was uncomfortable in my own body and hated even leaving the house. I couldn’t walk small distances without being completely out of breath and my back killing me. Let’s not even talk about trying to walk up a flight of stairs!
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I had tried different workout plans and diets and always gave up after a bad day then gained all of the weight back and then some. I never cared enough to seriously make a change until a year ago when I stood on the scale and it read “Error”. The heaviest weight it read was 356 pounds and from then on it just gave me an error. Mortified that my scale would no longer tell me how much I weighed, I knew I had to finally make a change.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
At my heaviest, I couldn’t even walk a small distance up my street without being out of breath and feeling like I was going to die. I purchased a FitBit on May 21st and started walking. I also tracked everything I ate with MyFitnessPal because food was a huge issue for me.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I started seeing results immediately! The first week was a high loss for me because I think my body was in shock by not having so much fast food and also by being more active.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I was the queen of excuses! I never *WANTED* to go workout. I finally realized that if I just suck it up, that it would be over before I knew it and I would feel so much better. If I skipped my workout, I knew I would always regret it. It is nothing to go workout for 30 minutes or an hour of the day when you look at the big picture.
Also, food was a huge issue for me. I was an emotional eater and when cravings hit me I would want to binge on nothing but that food. Tracking all of my calories really helped that.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
There were many days I wanted to give up, but I had given up so many times before I wanted to prove to myself that I could finally do it. I knew that if I gave up again, I would only gain even more weight and would be worse off than when I started. Also, my husband was a huge support for me. He’s on this journey with me, and when he has a bad day I help to push him and he does the same.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I don’t think it would be a weightloss journey without a plateau! My largest plateau came when I broke my foot in February 2016. Without being able to workout, I was so scared! I just made sure to track everything I ate and make healthier choices and I was able to push through that plateau.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I have lost 105lbs over the span of 1 year.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Non-scale victories are a huge part of my journey. Fitting into smaller sizes even when the scale is not moving is a huge one! Also, when I was at my heaviest my wedding rings no longer fit and now they are LOOSE! I also no longer have major anxiety going out to eat wondering if I can fit in a booth or if they will have a table available.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When I was at my heaviest, a lot of times I would eat fast food 3 times a day. I definitely cut down a LOT on fast food. I also used to be able to eat a whole pizza by myself. I will still eat pizza if I’m craving it, but I will be fine with a couple slices versus a whole large pizza. I do not eat completely clean, but I try to make healthier choices. It’s also all about moderation, my portions have definitely become smaller.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Like I mentioned before…when I first started, I couldn’t walk a small distance without being out of breath and my back hurting, but now I am able to run. I can lift heavier, I can do so much more that I feel like my options are endless!
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Track your calories! I used MyFitnessPal and went off of their recommendations and it really helped me on my journey. I would have been lost if I never tracked anything.
- Don’t get discourage and give up if you have a bad day, week, or month. Keep pushing through day by day and a year from now you will be AMAZED at your progress.
