WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I grew up overweight. I got called fat for the first time at 6 years old. I lost weight a few times during junior high and high school, but always gained it back plus more.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I just wasn’t happy. I was uncomfortable in my own body, and I had such a desire to be active, but being so out of shape made it difficult.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
After the birth of my second baby, I assumed I would step on the scale and see that I had lost all that “water weight.” To my surprise, it wasn’t water weight. I was so horrified and sad knowing how much work it was going to take to lose as much weight as I needed to in order to be healthy.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I had seen a commercial for a workout called Insanity. It looked near impossible, but I wanted to be able to do it, so I ordered it. I started changing my eating habits around the same time. I started to only eat real food, following mainly the paleo diet. I got my workout DVDs in the mail and I started doing them every day. At first, I couldn’t even do the warmup, but over time, I improved. As I ate well and moved my body, I lost weight, eventually losing 100 pounds.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I saw results right away. Of course there were plateaus, as you would expect with such a big number, but overall, I saw consistent results because I put in consistent effort.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I have had two more babies between my initial 100 pound weight loss and now. It was a challenge to stay consistent during pregnancy. I wanted to indulge in all my cravings and sit on the sofa all day, but I didn’t. Instead, I continued eating well and worked out almost every day, which allowed me to keep the weight off and stay on track and ready to jump back in post baby.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Of course! There were days when Inwould try to convince myself that where I was was good enough,but Inknew that for me, it wasn’t. Since I had such amazing results with Insanity and I wanted to stay accountable and help other people do the same, I became a Beachbody coach and started hosting accountability groups for others on their health journeys. Knowing that other people are watching has kept me accountable like nothing else ever could.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes. Lots of them. I still hit them. The key is to keep going. A plateau doesn’t mean you give up. It means you keep pressing… maybe even harder than before. If you can just stay consistent, results will come.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
Almost 2 years.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I’m able to run miles, I can complete any workout I try, I got a new wardrobe a few times, I feel good about myself.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I drink Shakeology every day to help me stay on track, get nutrients, and cut cravings. Other than that, I don’t eat packaged food. I don’t even buy it. And funny enough, I don’t desire to eat it at all either. Basically, if it is full of chemicals and preservatives, chances are that I’m not letting it into my body, because it will do nothing good to fuel my body for what it needs to do.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I work out six days a week. It’s my absolute favorite thing to do. It has become my “me time,” and Inmake it a non-negotiable.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Eat real food! Food is for fueling your body. Can you do that more efficiently with fruits and vegetables or with chemical laden food from a bag? Start to think of food in that way, and it becomes easier to make good choices
- Move your body. Find something enjoyable and commit to doing it at least five times a week, no matter what.
- Value yourself. Losing weight is hard and takes time. You are worth every minute put into your effort to get healthy.
- Watch portion sizes, but make sure you eat enough. If you aren’t eating enough, you’re setting yourself up for failure.
- Track your food. I don’t believe in counting calories, but I do believe in being mindful and aware of what you put into your body. I have logged my food every day for years. It has helped me make good choices and kept me from mindlessly snacking.
