My weight struggles began as early as elementary school. I began gaining weight in the 6th grade and have been clinically obese ever since.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY? My turning point came in February 2015 when I realized that I was on a path that was leading me to major health problems and quite possibly an early death. I had begin experiencing back and knee pain from carrying around the extra weight and had absolutely no energy to do anything.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? In March 2015 I began walking each morning in a local park. After a few months of this I finally felt emotionally ready to make bigger changes. So in September 2015 I joined a gym and began eating a low-carb lifestyle.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS? Once I changed my diet and got serious about going to the gym, I began seeing immediate weight loss. I lost 20 pounds that first month and have steadily lost since then.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART? My biggest challenge has been my love for all things sugar and carb! At the beginning it was so hard to pass up the cake, donuts, and pasta. Getting creative with my cooking has really helped me overcome this!
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? Yes. It was especially hard to keep going when I hit a weight loss plateau. But, I kept my goals clearly in front of me and continually reminded myself of why I was doing this.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? In April 2016 I hit a month-long plateau. This was the hardest one. Not seeing the scale move week after week was so discouraging. But, I stayed true to my diet and exercise, trusting that my body was adjusting on the inside in ways the scale couldn’t measure.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT? I’ve lost 100 pounds in nine and half months. I still have a significant amount of weight to lose. I hope to lose the rest in the next year.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES? I celebrate non-scale victories as often as possible!! Any excuse to celebrate helps keep me motivated!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? So much different! I try to eat less than 25g of carbs each day.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? So much different! I actually have physical activity now! Before, I did basically nothing. Now, I am at the gym at least 4 times a week doing cardio and strength training!
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- You can’t outrun your fork. What you put in your mouth matters!
- Keep a food diary! Accountabilty is key! There are free apps like MyFitnessPal or LifeSum that are great!!
- Set goals that are challenging but attainable. Having something to work towards is so helpful!
- Meal prepping will change your life. Most bad food choices happen because it’s generally more convenient. But, having healthy food prepared and ready to eat eliminates that.
- Don’t give up. Weight loss is a lifelong marathon, not a sprint. Don’t let a few bad days turn into months or years. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it!
