Walking Helped Me Lose 135 Pounds!
At 280 pounds and a size 30.
, when Maria Bova, 29, would go shopping, she’d hold up a pair of size-6 pants and wonder how anyone could fit into them. Now, 135 pounds lighter, she wears them herself. Four years ago, scared for her health after being diagnosed with precancerous cervical lesions, Maria stopped smoking and eating fast food and started walking. “I couldn’t walk more than two houses down without getting out of breath,” says Maria, a mother of one and a program director for a telecommunications company inSchaumburg,IL. “But it was the only exercise that wasn’t intimidating. Anyone can walk, right?” After two months, she was walking three miles a day. Today, she credits walking with making her a happier mom. “Before I lost weight, I was the mom watching my kid from the park bench,” she says. “Let’s face it — I couldn’t fit on the slide. Now we play chase.” Maria, who has since received a clean bill of health from her doctor and even competes in triathlons, also serves as inspiration for other women. “Women I meet who didn’t know me when I was overweight tell me they can’t walk because they’re not athletic or their joints ache,” she says. “I tell them those are just excuses — walking is what our bodies were meant to do.”
