The most recent recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American College of Sports Medicine are to exercise at moderate intensities for 150 minutes per week or exercise intensely for 75 minutes per week.

Paul Williams from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California found that distance walked was better than time walked for predicting body mass index and waist circumference.

    Same for me! Started with less then a mile, and now, I am up to 8-10. I need to get back to it though…I was hoping the article would give me the boost of motivation again! Lost over 100lbs walking each day. Feels incredible! So relaxing, and definitely good “ME” time. Too many benefits not to get back into it!

    I started walking at first could just walk about a mile then before I knew it I was walking 10 miles a day ,I lost 58 pounds that’s been five years ago and I have kept it off!!

    I’m curious I’ve been walking for nine months now gotten my speed up to four miles per hour can’t seem to get constantly higher than than. Trying to add more distance but during the week it’s sometimes more difficult. I can’t say it increased my weight loss because the previous year I lost 70lbs with no exercise at all. But I’ve become attached to it because I feel free when I’m walking and I feel strong. Nothing beats it. But I’d like to do more. Any suggestions for how to continue with the cold weather rolling in?

    I walked weight off I started at 2 miles and went up from there around 8 to 12 miles a day I started at 275 lbs and got down to 160 I have to say I feel 100% better

    Why is distance better? What is optimal distance? Also, I’ve long been told that incline is better than speed. Any mention of incline in study?

    My doc told me to walk 45 min as i lost weight and got in better shape i would walk farther distance in the same time …. Seemed to make since to me

    I use time as my main factor but know in that time the amount of distance and calories should be burned in that hour of cardio. Just me.

    I walk 10 plus miles a day 6 days a week and workout in the gym at least 2 days a week.

    Wendy Lemon…my lower back use to burn when I would walk/hike and eventually went away after my body was use to it and started losing weight! Stretching always help before, during and after!

      Stretching is such a major factor in whatever type of workout you are doing, but especially walking and running. A lack of stretching can put major strain on your joints and back. It is so important to warm-up and cool down properly, which includes stretching.

    I use the treadmill mph or the park I walk around is exactly 1.25 miles around. Then I divide by 60 minutes.

    When I first started walking the most I did was one hour about 3.5mph. I am 5’5 165 lbs now. Feels good. But I dont weigh daily. Maybe every 2 weeks.

    I have only been doing 10 miles since May. I started exercising March 1st. I have lost 22 pounds but crazy inches. My strapless bra slides down to my waist. I wish my boobs weren’t disappearing. My waist is shrinking though too. I stick to 1200-1400 calories daily. I was doing the P90x arm workout but sprained my wrist at work. So any weight work hasn’t happened in 2 weeks.

    I love to walk…..I lost a lot of weight by walking….started with 3 miles a day up to 6 miles a day and I kept a journal on the days I walked and he many miles……

    I walked in the park a little over 2 hours. 2 hrs 25min. Sometimes I break it into two a days. An hour and 20 minutes in the am & in the pm while watching The Voice, a good show or Netflix. I was off 7 days starting May 1st and I set a goal of 10 miles a day. It gets easier believe it or not.

    Is this on your blog? I can’t access the link. I’m curious. I am a walker. Not a runner yet. Until I lose more I am going easy on my joints. I did 10 miles today and so far 85 for this month. People think I’m crazy. LOL
