Slim Your Hips & Thighs

Deborah Booth Nazareth, PA 39 years old Lost 8 pounds, 10 1/4 inches, 7% body fat

Body Type: Pear Shape Thirty-six percent of women bemoan their hips, butt, and thighs as the places where fat takes up residence, reports a poll by the National Women’sHealthResourceCenter. “Bottom-heavy women also tend to be narrow up top,” says Freytag. “By focusing on upper-body resistance training to sculpt shapely shoulders and cardio to trim their lower half, pear-shaped women can create a trimmer, better proportioned shape.”

Booth has always enjoyed mountain biking, walking, and taking exercise classes. The problem was that she wasn’t consistent in how much or how intensely she worked out, and the pounds kept creeping on, especially below the belt. Now, “I love the way my backside fits in jeans, and the upper-body exercises make me feel more proportioned,” she says. But surprisingly, her favorite exercises have been the core moves. “I can’t believe how well they’ve toned my back and stomach.”

The other key to Booth’s fitness program success was watching her heart rate, a requirement in all of Freytag’s workouts. “Before, I was either not working hard enough or working so hard I got a headache. Now I continually adjust my exercise level to keep it where it needs to be so I feel good and burn fat.”

Food Tip Booth used to snack all day and then gorge on high-fat, high-calorie foods such as cheese cubes at dinner because she was starving: “In terms of volume, it wasn’t much, but the foods I chose were full of calories.” Young taught her to eat foods that are low in calories but high in volume, like fruits, veggies, and lean proteins, at every meal. “I don’t feel deprived because I’m eating more food than ever. I’m never hungry, and I’m losing weight.”
