Flatten Your Belly Maria Fill Glastonbury, CT 39 years old Lost 7 pounds; 8 1/4 inches off her chest, waist, hips, and legs; 6.5% body fat

Body Type: Overweight (need to lose 20+) Many women in this category try to starve themselves thin, and they inevitably regain the weight. “It’s really hard to lose weight and keep it off with diet alone,” says Freytag. “Along with healthy eating, women need consistent aerobic activity to shed fat once and for all. When you move your body, you burn calories. That’s what really keeps weight off.”

Why She Signed Up “I was busy. Life was stressful. I go out to eat a lot. It seemed easier to say, ‘What the heck’ and order nachos and a margarita than something healthy. Or ‘I’m tired’ and fall on the couch instead of exercising after work.”

Biggest Obstacle “I don’t want to deprive myself of the tastes I love.”

Koury will be the first to tell you she knows better. But somewhere along the way, she started making excuses for her expanding waistline. Then one day she looked in the mirror and thought, What happened?

“Now I plan ahead for everything,” she says. “On Sunday, I sit down with my exercise log and write what I aim to do each day. On most days I stick to it because it’s part of my plan. The same goes for food. I take a little time to decide on my meals and what I will–or won’t–eat when I go out. Then when I get there, the choice is already made. Just as every minute counts when you’re exercising, every bite counts when you’re eating. And it all adds up to a huge difference in your weight.”

Food Tips “I don’t want to deprive myself of the tastes I love, so I figured out how to make smart substitutions. To get the creaminess I love in a salad, I’ll slice up some avocado instead of drowning it in a rich dressing. I’ve also learned to do without. I’ll look at a glass of wine or a brownie and think: That’s 40 minutes on the treadmill–definitely not worth it!”

• How life has changed: “I am smaller than I have ever been, but most importantly I have my life back,” she says. “Shopping for clothes is no longer a dreaded task. I am involved with my family and doing things with them. I am healthy not only with my body but my mind. It is a whole new attitude. I like myself very much.”
