WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I have always struggled with weight. I was always the chubby girl in school. I use food as a comfort and therapy. I would eat when I’m happy or sad. I have been the victim of both physical and emotional abuse and food was what I went to for stress relief.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My weight affected my self-esteem. I never felt pretty enough or worthy of attention or love. Unfortunately I settled for unhealthy relationships because of my lack of self love.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
After struggling with infertility 10 years and being told that I would never conceive, spiraled me into a deep sadness. Fortunately, I did IVF and conceived my son who passed away at 24 weeks. This pushed me to turn whole heartedly to food and drinking. I ballooned to over 200 pounds. I woke up one day and decided that I couldn’t live like this anymore. I didn’t have control over my fertility but I did have control over my fitness and wellness!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I always knew how to lose weight but I didn’t know how to keep it off. I had to truly make this a lifestyle change. I found a book on clean eating and read it cover to cover. Finally I felt as though this was something that I can stick to. I began to only eat clean foods. I eliminated sugar and processed foods from my diet. I began to exercise 5-6 days a week.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I started to see results the first week. This gave me the motivation to keep going.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
The challenges I face in my weight loss journey is having to eat separately from my family. my husband does not eat the same as I do. I have to prepare separate meals. It makes it challenging to overcome the tempting foods in the house.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
There will be times that you will want to give up. What keeps me going is seeing results and having an overall sense of health and well-being.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
When ever I have weight-loss plateaus I would increase my exercise intensity or modify my diet. I also stopped weighing myself every week.I now measure my success in my clothes or measurements.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It took me about a year to lose 70 pounds. It was not a quick fix.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I have several non-scale victories such as the way my clothes fit. A healthy heart, healthy blood pressure, and more energy.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I eat 4 small meals a day and try to stick to low carb dishes. I do my best to eliminate excess sugar, breads, and pastas. I love to search the Internet for new and healthy recipes to try. My diet when I was heavier consisted of high fat foods, sweets, and lots of pizza! Now I try to substitute healthy versions of my high fat treats.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When I was heavier I didn’t enjoy exercising because I was short of breath and it was more of a chore than enjoyment! After, I found my first Zumba class I was hooked on group fitness classes! I became a licensed Zumba instructor and personal trainer and now I help others fall in love with fitness!

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Be consistent. You have to follow through as best you can daily! You don’t want to start over every week.
  2. Focus on eating whole foods. Eat clean as much as possible. Give your body nutritionally rich foods. Eliminate sugars and processed foods as much as possible.
  3. Be determined and let go of excuses. Don’t stand in your own way.
  4. Be patient, you won’t lose weight overnight. Take the time to learn how to create positive lifestyle changes so that you can keep the weight off for good!
