WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
Have been over weight my whole life but in 2004 when my husband found out he had a brain tumor it spiraled out of control. At one point in 2011 I could not find a scale to weigh me. I started working on losing weight then. I eventually found a scale and weighed 474.
I got down to 400 even but gained it back after a knee injury. In September of 2013 I had went back up to 449 lbs.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I could not tie my shoes so went to loafers. I was unable to buckle my seat belt or fit in the drivers seat of most vehicles so could only drive a large truck or van. I had to drive 2 hours away or have my Mom make my clothing. I was on all kinds of medication. I had no self confidence and cried a lot food was y only comfort to deal with all the emotions, My knee injury caused me to have to give up my job of 15 years to hunt sit down work.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I was walking out of a pizza place and I had talked to a friend whose son owned a local gym. She gave me a pretty good talking to and told me she would workout with me if I would rejoin the gym and talk to her son.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I bought a year’s membership at Legacy Fitness in Franklin NC and the owner at that time, Dustin Chovanic took me on a client for personal training. I could do very little and in the beginning almost all exercise’s had to be modified. I actually fell during the first training session.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
With in a few weeks I had dropped 5 lbs. and began to have more energy.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
During the process I had changed jobs so my income had taken a major drop. My schedule was always changing so we had to adjust workout days and time. I was also dealing with a lot of the emotions and self esteem issues.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Yes, several times. Dustin always seems to know when I need a pep talk or a butt chewing. Having someone who believes you can do it and pushes you to keep going really helps. The people at the gym have become another family to me. Having that support system really helps. Facebook has also helped it has given me a place to express myself through the ups and downs.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes, push through them. My trainer always knows when I need to change things up. He gets me through any bump in the road. I also have to keep myself focused which sometimes is hard but you always have to remember why you started.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I have been at this a little over two years.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
The first time I was able to buckle a seat belt I screamed.
Clothing size dropped from a 6x to 1x.
Completing 3 5 k’s
Training for a half marathon.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Totally different I use to drink a lot of soda I now drink a gallon and half of water daily. It went from a lot of processed food to high protein. I now love protein shakes and smoothies.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Literally couch potato to completely active. I work out 6 days a week and sometime multiple times a day.
