Find inspiration, motivation, and workout tips | Losing Weight Saved My LifeAfter arriving at a hospital emergency room with a blood sugar level far above normal, Akumaprince is lucky to be alive. He is working on restoring his health to the fullest by using Calorie Count, changing his eating habits and adding exercise. Currently, he’s lost 90lbs.

1. What prompted you to begin this weight loss journey? Did you have an “Aha!” moment?

What prompted myself to lose weight was I almost died from my blood sugar being too high. For a month prior my eye sight had gone blurry and I had been feeling sluggish and sleeping a lot. One morning woke up, started getting ready and passed out.

My wife called a friend who was a nurse and she came over, tested my blood sugar with her meter, and it wouldn’t even register. When the EMTs arrived they tested my blood and it was even too high for their meter. They said was so high they could smell the ketones. I went to the hospital barely conscious and they said my blood sugar was over 1200 and that I was lucky to be alive.

It took about 3 days for my blood glucose to come down enough that I was able to function. My eyesight had gotten so blurry I could barely see and I was so weak, I could barely walk. I stayed in the ICU for 5 days, and on the hospital floor for another 2 days before I was released to go home.

It took a few months but with maintaining my diet by watching my carbs and calories, my eyesight came back, and I started losing weight. I mostly walked a lot but also worked out here and there.

Now, it’s 8 months later since my hospital stay and I’ve lost about 90 pounds and still slowly losing. I went from wearing a size 54 waist to now a 42 and they are starting to be a little baggy. My short term goal is to get to 250lbs, then I will shoot for 215lbs or maybe lower.

2. What other “diets” (programs, products, plans, or services) had you tried in the past?

I tried a few other Apps on my Android phone but Calorie Count was the only one that seemed to be the most accurate. Most other apps would generalize or I had to input literally everything myself or just kept track of just carbs and calories. Calorie Count’s app keeps track of everything.

3. Please describe how you reached your weight loss goal. What changes did you make to your usual diet, activity, lifestyle, and attitude?  Did you implement any other strategies besides Calorie Count?  What was the most important change?

I changed my diet drastically. I’m not proud of how I ate before. I ate pizza very often, sometimes three times a day mostly because it was convenient. When pizza wasn’t an option or I was just sick of it, I would eat grilled cheese sandwiches or pasta. Nothing whole wheat, all white bread. I barely ate veggies and fruit and I didn’t really eat meat, but also didn’t partake in any meat substitute foods either.

Now I eat plenty of vegetables and fruit. Also I’m a member of the carnivores as I eat ham and poultry now. I still stay away from beef though.

4. Please describe how Calorie Count was instrumental to your weight loss.

I use it to keep track of everything that goes into my body, it doesn’t matter if a meal or just a small snack. It helps me watch my carbs and my daily intake of calories. I love that it also keeps track of my activity so I can adjust my daily intake.

5. What difficulties did you experience losing weight?

At first was changing what I drank. I used to drink a lot of soda but I switched to diet right away. After a while I realized I was still drinking a lot of diet soda so I slowly got off it and now only rarely drink soda. I have found some drink mixes that are zero carb and only 10 calories per serving and they taste great and is an awesome alternative to just drinking plain water. However, you always have the option for coffee and tea, I just have to watch how much Splenda I use.

6. How long did it take you to see results? When did you realize that you were a success?

I saw results right away. I steadily lost weight at about 10 pounds a month, at first. Now I’m losing between a pound to three a month.

7. How do you prevent relapse?

Strong will, perseverance, and commitment. I know if I get out of control again I might not be as lucky and I have a strong sense of wanting to live.

8. How has your life changed now that you’ve lost weight?

Yes, I am more active and happier. I have even now just started a new job which I walk to and as soon as I get my bike fixed, I will be cycling there.

9. How long have you maintained your current weight?

I have been around my current weight for about a month now.

10. What tips do you have for other dieters?

  • Stick to it!
  • Cheating is fine as long as you’re smart about it and plan for it.
  • Don’t be afraid to try new things.
  • In fact just a little bit before writing all this, I was going have a serving of sugar free vanilla ice cream but I decided to go even healthier.  Instead I had some vanilla greek yogurt with some diced fresh strawberries I cut up myself. This was very tasty!
