More than 110,000 health clubs around the world offer Zumba classes.

John Porcari and colleagues from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse found that Zumba was effective and fun.

People burned nearly 10 calories per minute and increased heart rate to between 140 and 184 beats per minute during a 50-minute Zumba class.

    Just pointing one thing out to those who are saying 1,000 calories per minute in a class is unlikely. This article clearly states approx. 10 calories per minute. Most Zumba classes last around 50 minutes. Correct if I’m wrong but that’s only 500 calories. Now being a bigger girl and having don’t Zumba with a friend I know that I burn more calories. We used the xbox thing that records you doing it. We both burned well over 500 calories. Close to 800-900 calories. Just saying. Different weights take more energy/calories to move. Weight matters. A person weighing 120 will burn way less calories than someone who weighs 320.

      Yes, I often want to know 10 calories per minute for what size person? But yes you are correct…. most times I figure they are basing on a 150lb person. But I could be wrong. I just wish they would be more accurate.

    Isn’t movement better than none at all? Why do people question why one workout is better than another?

    I use my heart rate monitor and average 425 calories or so.

    I agree with you Megan Railey, I use to wear the bodybugg personal calorie management system when i do my workouts and one time there’s another student in the Zumba class I was at that was wearing the same calorie management system. She was about 50lbs heavier than me and at the end of our class we compared and surprisingly I only burned about 550 calories and she burned about 800, I was doing “more intense movements” than her and I was “more drenched in sweat” than her.

    Nope. Your weight directly effects how many calories you burn. It takes more work to move around a big body than a little one. That’s why your calorie intake depends on your weight. Weight loss apps and even weight watchers base calories burned or points earned on your weight along with the activity. You’d have to be pretty heavy for an hour of zumba to equal 1,000 calories

    You would still burn the same amount of calories no matter how much you weigh 60 minutes of ZUMBA you will burn close to 1000 calories

    That’s not accurate at all. Somebody who weighs 200 pounds is going to burn more than someone who weighs 100.

    Don Wulff thats too funny!Before I got promoted my Deli Mgr used to eat numerous donuts and wash them dowm with diet coke.I never understood the point!Lol

    I had a friend who wore one of those things that tell you and she burned 960 calories in one hour of Zumba at our gym!

    My HRM usually ranged between 750-1200 calories for a 50 minute class. The more you put in it, the more you get out of it. We always seemed to “level up” on several songs.

    Teri Timmons, when I lived in Berea I used to play volleyball a couple of nights a week. The gymnasium was used for jazzercise (bouncercise) before. Most of the ladies were large! They would bring homemade cakes and pies to eat afterward. It was the funniest thing I ever saw. We called them the pie ladies.

    i just started zumba i love it but i am not a spring chicken and over weight so i can only last about 30 minutes but i am trying

    It depends on your weight, your age, your body composition (how much muscle versus fat you have) and how intense you go as well as duration of work out.

    I’ve used my HRM to calculate… Depending on the class, I’ve burned anywhere from 650 – 1100 calories in an hour.

    LOVE Zumba!!! Each person is unique and the amount of calories burned varies from the intensity you put into it. I’m going to a class tonight.

    Love love Zumba…especially now that I have Apple TV and I can YouTube my favorite songs …for free!! It is just like jazzercise….just different dance . It’s all good …as long as we are moving!

    I’ve lost 100 lbs with Zumba. You can burn over 1000 calories an hour with the right routine, and especially if you are carrying “extra weight” like me.
