First Name: Yvonne
Age: 46
Family status: Married
Occupation: Sr. Project Manager
Hometown: Brooklyn, N.Y.
Pounds or inches lost: I have lost a total of 250 pounds!
Starting Weight: 497 pounds
Current Weight: 247 pounds

Yvonne’s Weight Loss!
When did you become unhappy with your weight?
In 2000 I got married and was very happy. My husband and I ate our way through every new experience and by the start of 2002 we realized our health was in jeopardy.

What made you decide to lose weight?
Having always been on one diet or another my entire teenage and adult life, I decided this time whatever I did had to be permanent. I was borderline diabetic, my joints ached, my asthma was out of control and I was miserable.

What were the most important changes you made to lose weight?
Prior to selecting weight loss surgery I realized that it was not the food that was the problem – it was my attitude toward it. Why I ate. Starting about 6 months prior to surgery I cut out all junk food and started an exercise program of walking every day. I also realized that I had to find other outlets to celebrate or deal with stress. My husband and I together made better food choices and also planned our meals.

What was most challenging about losing weight?
After weight loss surgery the pounds seemed to melt away however, I knew that would not last forever and in order to maintain my losing I would need to seriously begin an exercise regimen. Working out at least 1 hour every day. In the beginning it was only the treadmill, then walking the hills in the neighborhood. I soon moved over to the elliptical glider and after 2 years I was finally able to take some of the classes at the gym. I am now a bonafide gym rat! I also know that taking my vitamins daily and drinking at least 96 oz of water per day is absolutely necessary.

How long did it take you to start to see results?
I started seeing the results after about 3 months. It took my mind much longer to grasp the concept of a new smaller me. I still have some imaging problems today always viewing myself as bigger than I really am.

How long did it take for you to reach your current weight?
It took me 2 years and 6 months to reach the weight I am at currently.

How long have you maintained your weight loss and how do you do it?
I have been maintaining this weight for over a year now. I work out every day. I continually switch my routines so I do not get bored. I still love taking classes at the gym – Spin, Cardio Kickboxing, Yoga, and Body Pump – however I also bike ride, jump rope, and do most of my stretching at home.

How has your life changed now that you’ve lost weight?
I am now truly living my life. I have energy that I have never known existed. I like to set goals and see how long it takes to achieve them when exercising.

How did ShapeFit help you reach your weight loss goals?
ShapeFit has given me ideas for different types of exercises to keep me motivated. They have also helped me stay motivated by offering variety in food choices that I had not thought of on my own as well as exercise alternatives. Its great to see other women also striving for the same or similar goals and knowing they too are successful.

Yvonne’s Weight Loss Tips!
Weight loss tip #1:
Eat to Live don’t simply Live to Eat.
Weight loss tip #2:
Set achievable goals and reward yourself when you achieve them.
Weight loss tip #3:
Don’t beat yourself up if you fall back into the old routine. It’s not about the destination but the journey you take to get there.
Weight loss tip #4:
Keep a food journal, measure your foods, and try something new.
Weight loss tip #5:
Try different kinds of exercise so you don’t get stuck in a rut.

Yvonne’s Weight Loss Eating Plan!
Breakfast:
1/2 cup oatmeal 1 banana
Lunch:
3 oz tuna 1/2 cup spinach 1 medium fruit (apple, orange)
Dinner:
4 oz meat (chicken, fish either baked, broiled or grilled) 1 cup tomato and cucumber slices
Snacks or Mini Meals:
20 pretzels or 2 tiny boxes of raisins, or celery with nonfat ranch dressing

Yvonne’s Weight Loss Workouts!
Weight Training:
1 hour Yoga twice a week 1 hour Body Pump (weight lifting class) 1 time per week 1 hour jump rope or running stairs at high school football stadium bleachers

Name: Yvette Michelle Nathan-Jones
Age: 37
Height: 5’7″
Before Weight: 290 pounds

How I Gained It: I began gaining weight soon after I gave birth to my firstborn, Jasmyne. I decided to breastfeed my daughter, and I was told that if I breastfed I would need to eat a few more calories to sustain my energy. Unfortunately, I ate too many calories and the weight began to stick to me like glue.

I was also an emotional eater, and I loved carbs — especially breads and desserts. I was a stay-at-home mother with a new baby; I was doomed from the beginning. Prior to getting married, I was 180 pounds, which wasn’t great, but it was okay. By the time Jasmyne was 12 months old, I was well over 240 pounds. I started working with Jenny Craig, and I lost 40 pounds, but I had to stop going because it became too costly, and I got pregnant again.

When Jasmyne was two, I gave birth to another daughter, Kaylen. My pre-pregnancy weight was 232 pounds. Yes, I had gained most of my weight back. My doctor was very concerned and told me not to gain a pound. I only gained 13 pounds during my second pregnancy. I had two beautiful girls that I stayed home to raise, but I began to become unhappy. I stopped looking in the mirror. I started dressing frumpy. I was crying for no reason and having suicidal thoughts. We moved back to my hometown of Columbus, Georgia, and I found comfort in food. Food was my friend. Exercising was not important, because I didn’t care. I blamed myself for reaching an uncontrollable and unattractive size.

Breaking Point: I finally weighed in at a weight-loss center at 290 pounds. I chose not to join that program, but I did end up seeing a psychiatrist. After being diagnosed with hypertension and Type 2 diabetes, I finally joined KBH Fitness — a boot camp and personal training center here in Columbus, Georgia — in September 2009. I felt I was a lost cause, tipping the scale at a humongous 290 pounds, but my daughters were my inspiration. They needed a mother, and I was not going to allow weight to kill me.

How I Lost It: Katrina B. Hill and my fellow KBH’ers (that’s what we, the clients, call ourselves), are a trainer and support group that love to see you succeed. They all became my friends that I grew to love deeply. My workout regimen there includes five days a week of personal training, boot camp and/or aerobics.

I also totally changed my eating habits. I have incorporated more fruits and veggies, especially during snack time. Now, I snack on almonds, granola bars, fruit and yogurt. Junk food has been severely limited. I make lunch my biggest meal of the day and have condensed my portion sizes. At home, second and third helpings are rare. Sodas have been cut out and juice is moderated. We have replaced baked potatoes or French fries with sweet potatoes or sweet potato fries. I try not to consume any carbs after 3 p.m.

So far, I was able to lose 105 pounds! As a result of this tremendous weight loss, my family doctor took me off of all my medications for hypertension and diabetes, as long as I promised to continue working out. Those meds cost $332 a month, money that went back into my pocket.

My weight loss goal is 165 pounds, so, needless to say, I am still a work in progress. I chose to write about my weight loss journey on my blog, Losing Weight Finding Me, as well as on Facebook. I feel great! I wear a size 12, which is a big difference from the size 24 I used to wear. My body is becoming more and more sculpted, and my confidence is at an all-time high. My entire family has adopted a healthier lifestyle of proper eating and physical activity. Life is good!

Family Status: Married
Occupation: Musician
Hometown: Singapore
Pounds or Inches Lost: I lost a total of 42 pounds!
Height: n/a
Waist: 32″
Starting Weight: 198 pounds
Current Weight: 156 pounds

Winston’s Weight Loss Story!
When did you become unhappy with your weight?
I first started to feel unhappy with my weight when I encountered problems buying clothes. I also had difficulty breathing and felt tired easily when doing simple exercises like jogging.

What made you decide to lose weight?
The most important factor that made me lose weight is to look better in appearance. Also, I can join my friends in all sorts of exercise and sports.

What were the most important changes you made to lose weight?
Losing weight is not easy but it is also not difficult if you are determined. The only changes that I made was to alter my diet and include exercise.

What was most challenging about losing weight?
The most challenging thing about losing weight for me is diet. I used to love fast food, fizzy drinks and snacks. In order to lose weight, I avoided those foods as much as possible. I replaced snacks with fruits, fast food with soup noodles and fizzy drinks with ice water.

How long did it take you to start to see results?
As soon as my diet plan started. I started to exercise in a routine manner of 3 times a week. However, weight loss did not occur overnight. I only noticed results after 1 month.

How long did it take for you to reach your current weight?
I started out with low intensity exercises for 3 months. After that, I opted for higher intensity exercises in the gym. It took me a total of about 10 months to reach my current weight.

How long have you maintained your weight loss and how do you do it?
To attain success in weight loss throughout the 10 months is not easy. I would not want my efforts to go down the drain so I have maintained my weight loss for 2 years.

How has your life changed now that you’ve lost weight?
I have become healthier and look so much better in appearance now. I can also join my friends in a marathon where I have never done before.

How did ShapeFit help you reach your weight loss goals?
Weight loss tip #2:
Weight loss tip #4:
Exercise and increase the intensity gradually.
Age: 30
Family Status: Single
Occupation: Artist & Student
Hometown: Southampton , New York
Pounds or Inches Lost: I lost 150 pounds and kept it off for 10 years (size 54 to size 24)!
Height: 6’5″
Waist: 34″
Starting Weight: 350 pounds
Current Weight: 200 pounds

William’s Weight Loss Story!
When did you become unhappy with your weight?
During and after high school.

What made you decide to lose weight?
Starting college and realizing I just couldn’t do the things others were doing because of my weight (sports, dating).

What were the most important changes you made to lose weight?
Cutting out CORN SYRUP and refined carbohydrates. If “God” (nature) didn’t make it, I really don’t eat it.

What was most challenging about losing weight?
Overcoming the physical addiction to sugar and refined carbohydrates.

How long did it take you to start to see results?
I was so overweight, it took about 3 or 4 months before I and others could see results.

How long did it take for you to reach your current weight?
About 18 months.

How long have you maintained your weight loss and how do you do it?
10 years. I take ONE hour, ONE day a week and have whatever I want. No more than that. If I know I can make it through the week and I have my “hour” coming, it’s a lot easier to avoid temptation to binge.

How has your life changed now that you’ve lost weight?
I can wear the clothes I want to wear. I can be physically active and participate in sports. I can travel and I feel attractive enough to date the type of person I’m attracted to.

How did ShapeFit help you reach your weight loss goals?
Having a website like ShapeFit.com where I can see others are achieving and maintaining their goal weights is a huge inspiration to stay motivated, eat right, and keep active. ShapeFit is a GREAT motivator for keeping the weight off and keeping fit! I recently moved back to New York from California, and being “stuck” indoors for the winter could have been a real downer for me, but having ShapeFit.com to check in with helps me remember where I’ve been, where I never want to be again, and where I’m going. Thanks!

William’s Weight Loss Tips!
Weight loss tip #1:
Avoid corn syrup, refined sugars and carbohydrates.
Weight loss tip #2:
If “God” (nature) didn’t make it, don’t eat it.
Weight loss tip #3:
GET moving. If you can only do 5 situps or walk one block at first, DO it. Build up from there, adding on every few days.
Weight loss tip #4:
If you’re going to binge, make it for NO more than ONE hour ONE day a week, and only if you’ve achieved your weight loss and exercise goals for the week. Make it a reward to yourself.
Weight loss tip #5:
As you begin to lose weight, shop for clothing often. Occasionally buy something a size too small so you’re motivated to fit into it.

William’s Weight Loss Eating Plan!
Breakfast:
Hard cheese (look for something with no carbohydrates), scrambled egg, 3 slices of “good” bacon or ham (no carbohydrate) and a serving of fruit. Coffee or tea with sucralose sweetener and low fat half and half creamer. TALL glass of water!
Lunch:
Broiled skinless chicken breast or hamburger without the bun (you can even get this at McDonald’s if you need to eat out)! Serving of vegetable (sliced tomato, lettuce leaves) with no or VERY low carbohydrate dressing or tablespoon of mayo (READ labels – DON’T eat products that use CORN SYRUP)!
Dinner:
Broiled, unbreaded pork chop, broiled chicken, broiled beef. Serving of vegetable, hard cheese (no or low carbohydrate), coffee or tea and LOTS of water!
Snacks or Mini Meals:
No or low carb snacks. Don’t worry so much about fat and calories because these need to sustain you between meals and keep you from going on a binge later. Pork rinds, a few slices of hard cheese, 10-12 slices of pepperoni, a few slices of no-carb lunch meat (turkey breast, “good” ham, turkey bologna).

William’s Weight Loss Workouts!
Weight Training:
I started with 3 pound weights and worked my way up from there, adding on every few days or even every few weeks while always working within my limits, but always challenging myself to go JUST a bit further then I thought I could.
Cardiovascular:
Walk! Start by going to the end of your block and back if you have to, but GET walking. Walk to the post office, to buy the newspaper. Make EXCUSES to get out for a walk and leave the car behind. Walking out to get a cup of coffee or a diet soda somewhere is also a good way of creating a destination for yourself and having a small “reward” when you get there.

Family status: Single
Occupation: Student
Hometown: Pune, India
Pounds or inches lost: I lost 83 pounds!

Vishal’s Weight Loss Story!
When did you become unhappy with your weight?
We had a family wedding and the pictures of the wedding showed the way people reacted towards me which made me really unhappy. Idid not like people advising me and I wanted to prove that its not impossible for me to lose weight all by myself.

What made you decide to lose weight?
I looked at the pictures of my sister’s wedding and the videos. I looked horrible. I wanted to change this!

What were the most important changes you made to lose weight?
The first important change I made was in my thinking I had decided that I would not give up unless I achieved my goal weight. I modified my eating habits. I avoided junk foods and ate more of the juices and fruits. I started calorie counting and planned my meals each day.

What was most challenging about losing weight?
The most challenging thing was sticking to it and being motivated and determined and not giving up.

How long did it take you to start to see results?
Initially I got results in the first month which made me quiet happy but gradually it started slowing down. I therefore kept changing my diet and exercises to keep it going.

How long did it take for you to reach your current weight?
Its almost a year and a month now.

How long have you maintained your weight loss and how do you do it?
Just a month I still want to get a couple of pounds off me.

How has your life changed now that you’ve lost weight?
It has definitely made me more confident. It has changed the way people react to me. People no more make fun of me, which always happened when I was fat.

How did ShapeFit help you reach your weight loss goals?
I read about all the weight loss success stories and it motivated me, whenever I was tired of the routine exercises I was able to learn new exercises from ShapeFit.

Vishal’s Weight Loss Tips!
Weight loss tip #1:
Drink lots of water.
Weight loss tip #2:
Never give up.
Weight loss tip #3:
Count your calories.
Weight loss tip #4:
Eat less burn more.
Weight loss tip #5:
Stop eating 3 hours prior to bed time.

Vishal’s Weight Loss Eating Plan!
Breakfast:
Egg white omelet with veggies. Whole wheat toast (no butter). Water.
Lunch:
Chicken breast sandwich with lettuce and tomato on whole wheat bread (no mayo). Small salad with balsamic dressing.
Dinner:
5 ounces of grilled salmon with stir fried veggies (made with olive oil).
Snacks or Mini Meals:
Protein bars and protein shakes.

Vishal’s Weight Loss Workouts!
Weight Training:
I did not do too much weights. I just did some light weights 3 times a week..
Cardiovascular:
2 hours of walking (morning and evening 1 hour each) stopped using the elevator and started using the stairs (I live in n apartment on the forth floor). I did some cycling and running on the treadmill while in the gym twice a week.
