85 pounds in 7 months
My now-fiance and I started dating when we were 14. We were always kind of chubby, him more than me, but when we went off to college 230 miles away from each other, we gained a lot more than the freshman 15.
By graduation, he was 325 lbs at 6’2″ and I was 235 lbs at 5’7″. Once we moved in together we started to kind of watch what we eat and take walks in the evenings, but one day I looked at a new picture of myself and I decided enough was enough–that day was the first day that we went jogging.
It was incredibly difficult for the first 3 months (we couldn’t run more than a minute at a time) but we kept at it and kept improving. Three months in, we joined Planet Fitness (super budget friendly for full-time grad students!) and now, a little over 7 months in, we are down to 210 and 150 lbs (and thinking of running a half-marathon!)
We never thought we could do it, but we never really tried. We’re the fittest and the happiest we’ve ever been, and things that we enjoyed before (skiing, kayaking, hiking) are infinitely more enjoyable now. When people ask for before-and-after pictures, I show them a picture from a summit in the Adirondacks (a hike that we barely finished and made us feel like we were dying) and a picture from the summit of Three Ridges (our first time backpacking with 40 and 50lbs on our backs–we felt awesome!)
I now know that I couldn’t blame anyone but myself before. All I ever had to do was be mindful of what I was putting in my mouth and exercise 30 minutes a day. There was no excuse, and I will never go back to the way I felt before.
