WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?

I started to develops weight issues when I began going through puberty. Around 14 years of age I started to gain weight. I developed so much faster than any other girl in my grade. I felt so self conscious and began to rely on the comforts of food.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My weight issues directly affected every aspect of my life. After such a huge weight gain at the age of 14, I fell into a state of depression. Once I realized what I had done to my body, I began to obsess over what I ate and how much I worked out. At the age of 16 I had developed a sever eating disorder as well as a compulsion to workout at least twice a day. My weight plummeted to an all time low of 100 lbs. My parents tried desperately to get me to eat and ease up on the workout to no avail. It wasn’t until I began to loose my hair that I knew I needed help. I began to see a therapist and nutritionist four days a week. I cannot put enough emphasis on how much those two women mean to me. They saved my life! After I got my body back in track it was time for college. I was an athletic girl and received a scholarship to cheer. Early morning workouts… Saturday games… And yet, I still found time to live it up like most college students. Partying, late night fast food runs, and not to mention beer. Three aspects of my young adult life that sent me on a weight roller coaster. By my senior year of college I had gained over 50 lbs. I found myself falling back into my old habits.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
After college graduation I began my career as an educator and a coach. I loved my job so much and became consumed with it. This, inturn, left me very little time to properly fule my body. A McSomething here, a #9 Borrito there. I noticed my clothes starting to fit much tighter than usual. It wasn’t until I went to put on my “Fat Pants” that I knew I needed to do something about my weight. And this time, do it the right way. I had to become what I preached to my athletes!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I found the courage to go to a notable nutritionist in my area. She had me step on the scale in her office to get my official start weight. I knew I would cry… But I knew it was something I needed to do. Stepping up onto the cold surface of that scale, I looked down at the number I saw and gasped. 220. I weight two hundred and twenty pounds! The nutrionist and I sat down and set up a plan for me that was sure to be a success!

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I started to see and feel results within a week of beginning my weight loss journey. I had more energy, more drive, and I had already lost 1.5 lbs!

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
The hardest aspect of my old lifestyle to give up was the fast food. I was addicted to it! It was like my comfort blanket! I would find myself driving to my all time favorite quick stop to get some of those wonderful French fries after working out for an hour! I went to my nutrionist and was VERY candid with her. She gave me several resources to help me make better decisions when eating out and also ways to manage my time so I could meal prep at home.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I have not given up since I began. I blame it on my addictive habits. My drive comes from my ingrained desire to be the best. I want to prove that you can change your life in a drmarice way with the right tools and support!

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I hit a “weight wall” right around 150lbs. It was a rough patch for a few months. I would workout 6 days a week and follow my nutrionist plan to no avail. After my third weigh-in at 150, my nutrionist and I recreated my weight loss plan. I changed up my workout plan and my diet to include different option to reboot my body!

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I have been on my weight loss journey for 1 year and 3 months now. I saw the most weight loss in the first 9 months of my journey.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
The one thing I am most proud of throughout my entire journey is the fact that I am now training for a half marathon. I was once a state runner up in track and field back in my high school years. To be able to run once again is more satisfying than seeing any number on a scale.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I eat more meals now than I ever did when I was heavier. I have five meals a day that are rich in proteins and low on sugars and artificial ingredients. I love to eat colorful meals! No more nuggets for this girl!

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
The heavier version of me NEVER worked out! Not even a walk around the block! I now workout at least 5 days a week. I mix cardio and strength training. At the current time, I am training for a half marathon that I will run in October!
