WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I started developing a weight problem around the age of 9 years old, when I was in 4th grade.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was overweight into obese for the majority of my years thus far, which affected aspects of my life greatly. I gave up on participating in any sports after 6th grade, when I decided that I was too fat and out of shape to be successful in any. I consistently underwent vicious bullying by my peers every year in school because of my weight, which resulted in a loss of confidence and self esteem. I had few friends all my years in school and gave up on participating in anything other than school band and my grades were horrible. I didn’t believe I would achieve anything, even after graduating HS, because of my appearance and the fact that I couldn’t even find the motivation to lose weight and get healthy.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
The “turning point” that got me started on my weight loss journey actually wasn’t anything different than the countless times I tried to lose weight before it actually happened. I absolutely hated how big and unhealthy I was. I looked awful and felt awful, all the time. I was one doughnut away from becoming diabetic, always on meds for my sugar problems, and sick with exhaustion constantly. My knees were going bad because of my weight and I was staying in a toxic relationship because of my fear of being alone because I couldn’t imagine anyone else wanting me.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I woke up on December 9th, 2014 and decided I was done with being in the state that I was. I’ve done this several mornings before, so even then, I didn’t think it would last and that I would actually do it this time. I’m fortunate enough to nanny for a wonderful family who gave me access to their workout equipment, which motivated me to start exercising. I walked on the treadmill for about 30 minutes everyday to start off, and I walked slow, at no incline. Being as out of shape as I was, it was all I could handle. Along with that, I started making healthier choices foodwise and surprisingly, I stuck with it!
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I started seeing results on the scale almost immediately, losing 4 lbs in my first week! After two weeks, I had already lost around 8 lbs and received news from my doctor that my insulin levels were great and I didn’t need to be on the medications anymore. This was all a huge driving force for me to keep going. I was seeing results fast in many aspects and I was feeling happy and confident in myself for the first time in a LONG time!
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I had many challenges to overcome in terms of following a healthy lifestyle and achieving my goals. I had broken up with my ex for good, the toxic relationship I was forcing myself into, I was in school full time, I worked a full time job, I was helping my older sister plan her wedding, and I was always broke because of average bills on top of medical bills that had piled up. I was on my own, sharing a small, rundown apartment with my roommate at the time, and had every excuse to give up on myself but I didn’t. I kept going.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I can remember just lying on my bedroom floor and crying several times throughout my journey, wanting so desperately for the process to be over so I could just be where I wanted to be. It was so hard and so stressful changing my lifestyle completely. I hated the fact that as a very young adult, instead of going out to club and eating pizza and burgers every night with my friends, I had to make the healthy choices and force myself to go to the gym instead. I couldn’t let go of the fact that it wasn’t fair that I couldn’t just be thin and healthy like some people. I had to do all this work. Despite these moments that tested every ounce of me, I never let it take me in. I was hooked on achieving my goals and becoming that person I always wanted to be.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I hit my first weightloss plateau after about 6 months, 60 lbs down. It was summer 2015 and I had met a new guy who I fell inlove with immediately. I wanted to take a break from all the insane exercising and hardcore dieting and have fun. So, I did just that. I was fortunate enough not to gain any of my weight back, but the weightloss did cease. I also underwent gallbladder removal surgery that summer, (which is a common side effect of rapid weightloss) which set me back as well. Once Fall of 2015 rolled around, I did new research on the right ways to continue losing weight, gaining lean muscle, and becoming healthy and from then to now, I was able to drop another 19-20 lbs and build lean muscle as well.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost most of the weight in the first 6 months of my journey, which came out to be around 60 lbs.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I had non-scale victories all the time, and still do! I went from a pant size 24 to a size 8! I also consider my new muscle tone all over to be a huge non-scale victory.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When I was heavier, I would often eat fast food everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. I simply just didn’t care about what I ate. Now, I’m obsessed with eating whole foods, natural, organic, etc. I don’t touch fast food and I love to cook great meals!
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When I was at my highest weight and started my journey, the most I could do physically, before passing out, was walking on the treadmill at 0% incline, 2-2.5 mph, for a maximum of 30 minutes. I was drenched in sweat, absolutely exhausted, and my knees killed me after doing this. I’m happy and proud to say that after nearly 80 lbs down, and a significant change in body fat percentage, I’m training almost everyday in boxing and MMA at a great gym and also weight lifting with my husband weekly. The amount of exercise I can achieve now is drastically different that what my body could handle a year and a half ago.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Don’t just do cardio! Cardio is important, but building lean muscle is just as important for keeping the weight off!
- Don’t diet. Diets don’t work! Don’t count calories. Counting calories is equal to starving/restricting! Eat whole, real foods and take care of yourself!
- Exercise, but don’t OVER-exercise. 3-5 days a week is a good balance. Rest days ARE important!
- Find something active that you LOVE to do! This will help motivate you and keep you wanting to exercise and get better! This goes along with food too! Don’t cut out your favorites. Just find ways to make them healthier! Pinterest is your friend. Trust me.
- Believe in yourself. Believe that you are capable of anything. Don’t give up!
