78 Pounds Lost: Becoming She Ra
As a child I was always overweight, I started my first diet at the age of 9! And throughout my teenage years I tried various FAD diets until I let myself believe I was destined to be the “fat girl”. Blaming everything for the cause, my thyroid, my job, my pregnancy, breastfeeding, everyone else, even shops for making the sizes smaller…

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
Shortly after the birth of my oldest daughter, I had pains in my chest, after a trip to the hospital the nurse gave me a firm warning I needed to address my eating habits, but I didn’t see I was doing anything wrong.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
That photo of me on the rock in NYC, that’s not the person I saw in the mirror. Ok so I knew I was a “bigger girl” but not that big! My now husband had just proposed and I really didn’t want to be a “plus sized bride”.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
My sister gave me another nudge and bought me a book on how to cook my favourite meals in a healthier way. That and a calorie counting website was the starting point and an eye opener into how much I really was eating!
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I started to see results straight away, in the beginning the numbers were flying off the scales! It really encouraged me to do more, I even took up running (although I hated it)!
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Weight plateau was a massive challenge! When I’d hit a plateau, I’d eat less or change to a different FAD diet, or exercise more.. This was a recipe for disaster and it lead to binge eating, regaining my weightloss, over exercising and undernoruishing myself.
I gained more weight during my second pregnancy, the move overseas made juggling my routine too hard.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
The tiredness and Constance hunger during my second pregnancy was really difficult and during this time I regain 70% of the weight I’d previously lost.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Hitting a weightloss plateau is completely de-motivating and with a lack of correct information available I restricted my eating further and increased my exercise regime.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It took about 18 months to loose most of the weight, before regaining it and loosing it again! I’ve been in successful maintenance for 2 years..
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Smashing my scales was a huge victory! Finding a passion for lifting weights and sporting events has elevated the monotony of dieting and propelled me into a life were I embrace and love fitness and fuelling my body with LOTS of great food that helps my body to thrive.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My food intake when I was heavier was double what it is now at around 4K calories, 3 massive home cooked meals a day (portions that would feed a small army) sweets, cake, snacks and wine! Lots and lots of wine!
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I’ve completely turned my life around, it’s no secret I was completely sedentary before, this year though I’ve completed my first triathlon, the Spartan Trifecta, competed in a local Crossfit games and place 3rd, completed the notorious Tough Mudder and got a new squat PB at 105kg
