WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?

When I got pregnant with my first my appetite went through the roof, I didnt even notice that I was so big until after I had my son and the weight was still there. I avoided mirrors and until someone took a photo of me and showed me it I never realised how bad things had got.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
As soon as I realised how badly I had let myself go I avoided everyone, I just panicked so badly that everyone but me had noticed and I was so angry at myself I went into a deep state of depression.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
When I saw the photograph that someone had taken of me I straight away decided to do something about it. The photo showed me that it wasnt just my weight that had been the problem, I had scruffy hair, no make up, I was covered in food stains and I had given up on life all together. I was in a terrible relationship with a partner that did nothing but put me down and it took its tole on me.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I set up a food app to track my calorie intake and I looked on youtube for some HIIT workouts, I switched from full sugar drinks to diet and drank more water and I started thinking about how my relationship had affected me. My then husband began to put me down for trying to lose weight and made jokes that I would always be fat and disgusting. So one morning I got up, packed a bag and I left. From that point on I was happier and could live a healthier life without negativity.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I started to see results quite quickly but got so discouraged when the weight loss slowed or stopped. But i kept going, I have cheat days but on those days I know I will be back on track the following day.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I had to overcome many things on my journey, I had a lack of support in the beginning but after a while I found I did better without peoples input anyway, and after a year of losing weight very slowly I met my current partner who has supported me throughout everything and has been my rock. We had a baby together and the pregnancy made me gain 2 stone back but with his support I lost it all again and he never once put me down, just encouraged me when I got down about my weight.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I have nearly given up a few times, but my partner and my kids keep me going. Children need a positive role model and when my oldest son said “I want to be big and strong like my mummy,” i knew that I would never fall off the wagon again.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I have had many times of slow weight loss and weeks where the scale didnt change and even went up when I was working really hard. But I slowly learned that the scales arent everything and sometimes the visual results are so much better to go by.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
it took me well over a year to lose most of my weight, but I gained 2 stone following my second pregnancy, but I lost it again and am now at my lowest weight and have never once gone too low on my calories. Our bodies need nourishment to lose weight and being hungry all the time was just not for me. So losing weight was a slow process for me, but I have minimal loose skin and belive it was the slower process that helped with that.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I have gained some muscle causing the scales to go up and I am fine with that. I do have bulking phases to gain muscle and it is physically and emotionally challenging gaining weight again as I start to panic about being big again, but the scales arent everything.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When I was heavier I would eat whole cheesecakes, pizzas, ice cream, always topped off with a lot of full sugar coca cola. I was ordering take-out at least twice a week and rarely bought vegetables or fruit.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
At first I started doing some cardio but it felt like a chore to me. I am still to this day not very fond of cardio. But I found a love for weightlifting and have since used it to gain muscle and to lose weight in phases. Weightlifting makes me happier, healthier and stronger and I would choose lifting over cardio any day.

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. EAT! – Eat healthier but dont limit yourself to salads and protein shakes, there are so many lower calorie possibilites that sometimes you only need to change the way you cook it. i.e. stop frying chicken and poach or bake it instead.
  2. DONT STRESS! – Easier said than done I know but I hear so many people saying “its been 2 weeks and I havent lost weight!” It is a slow process but stick to it and you WILL get there!
  3. DONT RELY ON SCALES! – The scales show all weight loss and gain, sometimes you gain water and sometimes you lose it, they are not the boss of you, If you look in a mirror and feel like you look better then believe it!
