WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?

I have always been overweight, but it would fluctuate from 20-30lbs overweight (in high school) to 50+ lbs overweight in college and after.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
Being overweight affected every aspect of my life. It held me back from doing things I wanted to do, from being confident and from finding self love. Which ultimate led me to a terrible relationship in high school and college and drinking. I used drinking as a way to feel more comfortable with myself.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
The “turning point” for me was about 2 months after my Dad had passed away. He fought a rare form of cancer for over 5 years. I don’t believe he would have been around that long if he hadn’t been healthy himself. He always kept his weight in check, ate healthy, and was active. I believe that allowed him to fight the cancer with every thing he had.

About 2 months after he passed away, I was in a pretty bad place and was hiding it. I was binge/emotional eating every chance I got. I was sleeping an insane amount. I wasn’t living my life.

One day, I just realized that this is NOT how my dad would want me to live my life and if I ever had any health problems that I couldn’t control (like cancer) i wanted to be equipped with a POWERHOUSE body to be able to FIGHT like hell.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I had purchased the workout program T25 (a long time ago) and it sat around my house unused. I decided I was going to commit to that. Most days I did T25, some days I would go to our apartment gym and use the treadmill.

I committed to a MINIMUM of 25 minutes of workouts every day. I also followed the meal plan (which ultimately cut my calories to around 1500 a day) and was making MUCH HEALTHIER food choices.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
My weightloss results were pretty immediate. Going from sleeping 15+ hours a day and eating and sitting the rest of that time to working out (as much as I could at 225lbs) and meal prepping. I certainly hit plateaus along the way, but I’m pretty sure I lost weight my first week.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I had to overcome (and still work on overcoming) my emotions. My emotions getting the best of me and letting it lead to stress/binge-eating.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I wanted to give up so. many. times. I mean, I think that is totally NORMAL. Hitting walls, hitting rough patches. But I had tried to lose weight SO MANY TIMES before. I really wanted to honor the commitment I made to my Dad and myself and see what happens when I didn’t give up. See how much I could accomplish.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I felt like every 10lbs I hit a weightloss plateau. My body seemed to know between 209-201 was EASY, then 201 to 199 was HARD. Same thing to get under 180 and under 170 and now to get and stay under 160 has been a struggle.

I think the key is to REALLY pay attention to your nutrition. That doesn’t mean SUPER calorie restriction. It just means being SUPER honest with yourself. Are you really eating PERFECTLY to plan on the weekends (my biggest problem). Most of the time when I hit a plateau it was because I was not eating what I should have been and let my portions or type of foods get out of hand.

Reigning in my nutrition always seemed to do the trick, but I think changing things up, your workout routine or program is always a good idea too.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost most of my weight in about 6 months.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Oh good heavens I had TONS of Non-Scale Victories! Being able to fit into a size 6, feeling AMAZING in my wedding dress, wearing a bikini confidently, the list goes on and on and on and on……

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My daily diet now is DRASTICALLY different than before.

Before, I would eat an entire package of oreos, ice cream, bread, and pasta with sugary cereal for breakfast and coffee with TONS of cream and sugar. I drank regular Coke throughout the day with minimal water.

NOW, I am conscious of the calories I consume and HOW I’m getting those calories. Fresh fruits and veggies are a big staple in my diet as well as Chicken and Turkey. I also drink Shakeology on a daily basis because vegetables are not my favorite so I know I’m getting in my nutrients. I also gave up coffee for the most part and I have treats occasionally.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My physical activity is 110% different as well. I work out almost every day. Some days are active rest days and other days it is full out. I also became an Insanity Group Fitness instructor so I teach classes locally as well. I am down to try ANYTHING now. I am not scared that I won’t be able to do it. I love paddle boarding and kayaking and just getting out there and being active. It’s a whole new lifestyle for me.

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. DO NOT GIVE UP. EVER. There will be hard days, weeks and months. Just KEEP GOING. I know everyone says this, but it is so true. It doesn’t matter how SLOW you go, if you keep moving forward, you WILL Get there and I promise it will be worth EVERY SINGLE struggle.
  2. Find something that works for you and don’t listen to ANYONE else! Home workouts worked for me. It has been the only thing I have stuck with and been able to progress with. Group fitness classes, a personal trainer, going to the gym, running outside, crossfit, etc. there are SO many options and I think that fitness is a very personal thing. It has to fit into your lifestyle and work for you, or you won’t do it.I still have people today who tell me I should go to the gym and get a trainer. I appreciate their “advice” but I am going to continue to do what has worked for me 🙂
  3. NUTRITION. NUTRITION. NUTRITION. It’s all about food. Don’t overcomplicate it. I know when I get stressed out with meal prepping or planning its typically because I’m trying to do too much. Find your “tried and true” recipes and then add one new recipe in a week. Keep it simple.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. I went to grief support groups and counseling. I found coach and an accountability partner. I asked my husband to help with the laundry so I could meal prep. You do NOT have to do this alone. Even if you are alone in your life, or someone doesn’t support you, there are SO MANY PEOPLE online who would love to help support you. The community online can be really wonderful if you find the right people
  5. Love yourself where you are NOW. Don’t think “I’ll be happy when I lose 50lbs” because chances are, you still will have issues regardless of your weight. I did this and when I lost the weight, i wasn’t happy. It wasn’t until I learned to LOVE myself regardless of my weight, that I truly became a happier person
