NAME : Amy
BEFORE WEIGHT : 290ish (I didn’t the courage to weigh myself until 5 months in)
AFTER WEIGHT : 241
POUNDS LOST : 50ish

WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
Like so many others, I was always heavy. I can’t really pinpoint a time where I developed my weight problem because I was heavy from early in my childhood on.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
Weight has affected every aspect of my life. I was always nervous going to the doctor, even as a child, because I knew I would be weighed, I was made fun of constantly at home and at school, I haven’t swam in a pool in a more than a decade, I won’t go to the beach, I don’t like buffets or eating at other peoples houses because I don’t want to be seen with food, I hated clothes shopping. This list can go on but I’ll stop there.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I watched the documentaries “Fed Up” and “Hungry for Change” and knew that if I didn’t take control of my health I was in for major problems, and sooner rather than later.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I went on a week long juicing fast (an incredible experience), then to a complete overhaul in my eating habits. Exercising came later.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
Honestly, at least 3 or 4 months. I felt the results within weeks of eating better, though.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I haven’t come across any specific challenges per say, just exercising when I didn’t feel like it really. Exercising did suck for me at the beginning, but now it’s just a part of life.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I did in my previous attempts, but not once have I wanted to quit this time around.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I just got out of my 3rd and longest “scale plateau”. I noticed changes in my body but the scale didn’t reflect it. I bumped my calories up to 1,800 a day (from 1,400) and changed my exercise routine.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I started March 22, 2015 and am still working towards my goal today.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Multiple!

Going from 22’s to 14’s. Being able to run a mile without stopping. Having to buy new sneakers because the old ones were too lose. Having more exercise clothes than regular clothes. Wearing rings that didn’t fit for years.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I used to eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted.

Now I prep all of my meals, except dinner, and eat as many whole, unprocessed foods as possible. Weekends are a little lax, but I do my best to keep it clean.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I worked 6 days a week behind my desk at my day job, then freelanced at night until 10 or 11 at night most days of the week. I had no physical activity.

Now I exercise 4 or 5 days a week (10-15 miles of running and 30-40 miles of biking).

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Be realistic with your expectations.
  2. Eat clean most of the time, but allow yourself the foods you love by working them into your meals for the day.
  3. Find exercises that you like. Treadmills and ellipticals are not for everyone.
  4. Be patient.
  5. Do not give up.
