WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I developed a weight problem at age 7.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
Being overweight has affected my life in so many ways. At a young age, I noticed that I looked different from the other girls in my class. My stomach being a lot larger than theirs was one in particular. While they were wearing pretty pink clothes, I was wearing large T-shirts that hid as much of my body as possible.
I had always felt as if I was a girly-girl trapped on the inside of a tomboy who everybody saw. Knowing that I couldn’t wear the clothes I desperately wanted to made me very insecure, quiet, and hopeless. Unfortunately, I hated how I looked for years, which in turn made me miss out on a lot of experiences.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
The turning point that got me started on my lifestyle journey was in January 2015. I was sick and tired of feeling sick and tired! Having little to no energy was something I had gotten used to but I quickly realized how much it had taken a toll on my body and life. I no longer wanted to hate my reflection. I wanted to love myself enough to get healthy for me and my family. I didn’t want to yo-yo diet anymore–I knew that if I wanted to see a REAL change, I had to be on this ride for the long-run.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started my journey by changing my eating habits first. I cut out juice, soda, candy, all sweets, etc. I wanted to focus on my nutrition before incorporating exercise because it’s a lot more important (abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym 😀 )
Once I was able to get used to eating more healthy, I started to exercise 3 days a week. Those 3 days were so hard for me at first, but like anything else, it gets easier once you keep at it.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
It took a little over a month for me to see physical changes in my body. My clothes weren’t as snug and I could tell my face had slimmed down. The changes I saw in less than 2 weeks weren’t physical at all–the amount of energy I had and how much better I felt from just changing my eating habits and drinking more water was so shocking to me!
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
The biggest challenge I had to overcome was being consistent with my nutrition. I would eat as healthy as possible Monday-Friday morning but by the evening, I had already eaten something unhealthy and chugged 2 glasses of wine. Saturday and Sunday would be even worse. I wouldn’t drink any water, ate whatever I wanted, and most of the time I didn’t exercise. In return, I was left feeling disappointed and discouraged on Monday morning. Unfortunately, this cycle lasted for many months and resulted in me seeing little to no weight loss.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I’ve wanted to give up plenty of times and I still feel that way some days. What keeps me going is remembering NOT to be so hard on myself. I am not on a diet. This is a lifestyle. I have to constantly remind myself that I’m not perfect and there is no finish line on this journey. There will always be times when I want to give up, but what will that do? Going back to how things used to be scares me enough to keep going and not quit.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
After losing quite a bit of weight, I hit a long plateau. Even with me exercising for an hour and a half daily and eating healthy, I could not break it to save my life!
I finally was able to break the plateau when I stopped pigging out on the weekends and was introduced to Shakeology. I also started doing high-intensity strength training workouts for 30 minutes which helped a lot as well.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Some people look to the scale for progress, but I personally look for non-scale victories. I used to love when old clothes that used to be too tight would fit me. Being able to look in the mirror and love my reflection was also a non-scale victory for me 🙂
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My daily diet is SO much different from when I was heavier. Before I started my journey, I barely ate or drank much of anything. I would skip breakfast and lunch, and eat a heavy (unhealthy) meal for dinner AKA the quickest way to gain unwanted pounds.
As of today, I no longer eat any processed foods. I eat 5 small meals a day every 2 hours which consists of lean meat, LOTS of vegetables, fruit, complex carbs, and plenty of water.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Drink PLENTY of water! It’s very important when it comes to weight loss and your overall health.
- Don’t be so hard on yourself. Remember that you are human, you’re not perfect, and mistakes will be made.
- Don’t compare your journey to others. It’s YOUR journey for a reason. Comparing will only dampen your mood.
- Portion out your meals. What I learned the hard way is you can overeat healthy foods which can still make you gain weight.Portion control containers or plates are extremely helpful.
- NEVER GIVE UP!Take things one day at a time and I promise you will not only lose weight, but you will gain a healthy lifestyle as well.
