NAME : Diane
BEFORE WEIGHT : 233
AFTER WEIGHT : 189
POUNDS LOST : 44

WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I started gaining weight after my divorce in 1981. At that time I also lost temporary custody of my children. Other health issues also arose when I discovered in 1989 that I was bipolar and would have to rely on medication for the rest of my life. These setbacks caused me to turn to food for comfort. I felt like Job in the Bible who lost everything; his health, children and almost his hope. I derived much comfort eventually from my faith as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. God cared for my children when I couldn’t and eventually we were reunited again. My focus in 2012 started with myself.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I felt unhappy and unhealthy. Moving was becoming a problem for me. My knees hurt as well as other areas of my body because I felt depressed.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
The turning point that started me on this weight loss journey was health reasons. I was put on blood pressure meds and my doctor said I was considered “obese.” That was difficult to hear. I was determined in 2012 to work on myself. I knew weight loss would be a challenge due to the bipolar and blood pressure meds I was taking but nonetheless I was confident in myself that I could lose weight.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I got started by following Dr Atkins; although not always as strict. I stopped the Haagan Daz nightly ritual and ate smaller portions. In February 2014 I joined a gym.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
Within a month I was noticing changes. More energy, less hungry, looser fitting clothing and compliments from friends.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I deal with depression and it will occasionally set me back. When I lost my mother in April 2014 it caused me to reach for comfort food again in the way of carbs. But I soon get back on track.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
At times. This saying keeps me going “nothing tastes as good as being skinny feels.”

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes I often hit plateaus but my goal keeps me going.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
2 yrs

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Yes! I love shopping for new clothes! I went from a size 1X to large.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Less carbs and smaller portions. I have eggs and bacon for breakfast usually salad for lunch. For dinner I’ll have meat with a low carb veggie.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When heavy I didn’t want to leave the apartment. I just wanted to snack all the time. Now I’m up early and out of the house. I’ll do mall walking or hiking or just window shop. I’m retired and loving it!

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Drink water
  2. Limit carbs including some fruits. If in doubt berries are always good.
  3. Eat smaller portions
  4. If you must indulge don’t hate yourself. Forgive yourself and move on.
  5. Don’t neglect exercise. Find something you enjoy doing and do it often.
