WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I have always been a little chubby about 15-20 lbs overweight since I was little or after puberty. With my oldest being diagnosed with Autism at two I started eating to heal my pain rather than address the problem.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My weight made me feel unattractive and so I rarely wanted my husband to touch me. He loved me for me but I kept pushing him away. Instead of focusing on what was really upsetting me I focused on others problems.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
My marriage was at an all time low. I felt like something was wrong and he was distant. I started running.I ran from the problems at first but then running begain to help me deal with the problems. the depression was healed by pure Joy of finishing my first mile then my sixth!
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started on the pavement! I was unable to get a treadmill up three flights of stairs to our condo so I started running in my area. No one ran in this area but I didn’t care. The Utah mountains were my friends every time I hit the pavement. I invested in some great Nike running shoes and took pride in doing something for myself. I spent most days worrying about what I could do for my kids and what I should be doing for my husband. This was my time.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I found emotional results almost immediately but I didn’t see result for a few years. It wasn’t until I started using Myfitnesspal that I lost ten lbs and then the rest started shedding.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
My husband was talking to another women through our lowest of times. He had no one to talk to. It began as a friendship that he soon saw as more. I almost lost him. That is when I said “God Change Me”. Because it wasn’t just his fault. My pain and anger was often took out on him and he felt hurt and looked to someone else for comfort. Luckily it was just telephone conversations etc. she lived in a different state but still I took this as another challenge to overcome and we did together overcome. We are stronger then ever and are now in this journey together of raising two autistic boys. When my second child was diagnosed I had running already to help me overcome the challenge of accepting such a diagnosis.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
When I started I had shin pains. I researched and it isn’t uncommon. I kept going and after months of discomfort my legs got stronger, my bones were stronger and my ability to persevere was stronger.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I have had difficulty getting under 130lbs. My way of getting past is still to be determined. But I believe in confusing your muscles and I also do core workouts to spice up my exercises. I may be at a healthy goal and just need to exchange some fat for muscle now.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
3 years. It took 3 years to lose 36 lbs and I’m ok with that. I think that healthy weightloss takes time and will be easier to maintain for life when done right.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I recently stopped eating meat and most dairy. For me that is a victory. I also am fitting back into an outfit I wore at me skinniest when my husband and I first started dating 13 years ago.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I use to think yogurt was a great snack. I would eat donuts and pasta. Now I eat lentils and beans and tons of veggies. My late night snacks are applesauce not Doritos. I also use to drink a lot of wine. I stopped all alcohol consumption.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I am go go go now. I love running and I try to run twice a week if i can. I just enjoy physical labor more and value what my body can do.
