WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?

I was in good shape in my early 20s, but it all fell apart when I was 23 and my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer. After her death less than a year later, the pounds packed on. Combining that with full time college and working multiple part time jobs, I never took the time to make myself a priority.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I definitely let my weight affect my life. I did not put myself forward in college or no social situations because I was self-conscious. I always felt like no one would take me seriously because of how I looked.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I came to a series of revelations that started me on my journey. First, I came to an acceptance of myself. Even though I weighed more than I should, I decided that my weight did not define me. I started buying stylish clothes and getting involved in life again. Once I took these steps, I realized that now I needed to take care of myself and make my health a priority.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started like everyone typically does: I joined a gym. For the first few months, I went and walked on the treadmill. Nothing drastic. Then I began team classes and training with an amazing trainer who kept me motivated. When finances made that no longer and option, I decided to become a Beachbody coach and workout from home. The 21 Day Fix Extreme is my favorite and I was able to drop two dress sizes in a couple of rounds!

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
It’s a slow process for me. And I still have a way to go. I lose inches much quicker than pounds which is why I am not a fan of the scale. It took the first three months at the gym for results to really start showing. When I switched to at home programs, it took two rounds to see a big difference.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I hit weight loss plateaus occasionally. When that happens I usually do a three day detox or amp up my exercise routine.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It took about a year to lose 30 pounds, but I was inconsistent and fell short a lot. When I’m consistent, I can typically lose a pound or two a week.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I was very much an emotional eater. And a stress eater. Late night homework? Sugar and soda got me through. Bad day? Baskin Robbins on the way home.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I am much more physically active now! I work out at least three days a week and I’m training for my first half marathon! I never would have even attempted that at my heaviest weight.
