WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
IN EARLY 2012 I BROKE UP A LONG FRIENDSHIP WITH SOMEONE THAT WAS LIKE A FATHER TO ME. THE STRESS OF THAT AND BETWEEN WORKING THE NIGHT SHIFT, I PACKED ON ABOUT AN ADDITIONAL 100LBS. BEING AT MY HEAVIEST I HAD ISSUES WITH REFLUX AND ESOPHAGEAL SPASMS. IT MADE FOOD HARD TO SWALLOW AND I HAD AN INCIDENT IN WHICH MY SON SAVED MY LIFE DOING THE HEIMLICH MANEUVER WHEN I STARTED CHOKING ON FOOD WHILE ON VACATION. AND THEN I WENT TO THE GYM ON THE VACATION WE WERE ON AND FOUND THAT MY WEIGHT WAS OVER 400LBS AFTER HAVING A SPECIAL FAT ANALYSIS TEST DONE.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
MY WEIGHT AFFECTED MANY THINGS IN MY LIFE, BOTH MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY. I WORK AS A PARAMEDIC AND WHEN SOMEONE CALLED 911 THEY EXPECT ME TO BE AT MY BEST PHYSICAL SHAPE TO HELP THE PATIENT AT THEIR TIME OF NEED. THERE WAS A TIME IN WHICH I WAS MORE OUT OF BREATH THAN THE PATIENT HAVING SHORTNESS OF BREATH AND THAT WAS EMBARASSING TO SAY THE LEAST WHEN THE PATIENT OFFERED ME THEIR OXYGEN BECAUSE I COULDN’T BREATH.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
HAVING MY SON SAVE ME FROM CHOKING WHILE ON VACATION AND THEN I HAD A FAT ANALYSIS TEST DONE ON VACATION AND REALIZED WHAT MY SIZE WAS.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
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

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
ABOUT 4 MONTHS IT TOOK TO START SEEING THE RESULTS

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
THERE WERE NOT TO MANY CHALLENGES DURING MY JOURNEY. OTHER THAN FINDING TIME FOR MYSELF DURING THE TIME WHEN MY DAD WAS SICK WITH LUNG CANCER. I TURNED MY PERSONAL TIME INTO MY GYM TIME. MY MIND AT TIMES WERE NOT AT THE GYM AND THERE WERE TIMES TO WHICH I COULD NOT FOCUS. MY FRIENDS AND TRAINER DID THEIR BEST TO KEEP ME ON TRACK. MANY TEARS WERE SHED IN THE GYM. MY OTHER CHALLENGES WERE FINDING TIME TO SLEEP, HAVING NO SLEEP MADE ME NOT WANT TO EXERCISE. SO I HAD TO STRATEGICALLY PLAN MY DAY BETWEEN GYM AND HOME. I HAD NO PERSONAL LIFE WHEN MY DAD WAS SICK. FAMILY COMES FIRST.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
MANY TIMES I WANTED TO GIVE UP, I WENT THROUGH MANY OBSTACLES BETWEEN WORK AND HOME. I AM A PARAMEDIC THAT WORKS THE OVERNIGHT SHIFT IN A BUSY CITY IN CONNECTICUT. THE STRESS OF TRYING TO KEEP THE GOALS TO NOT HAVING THE SUPPORT SOMETIMES AT THE GYM MADE ME FEEL LIKE I SHOULD GIVE UP. SOME PEOPLE AT THE GYM WOULD QUESTION MY EVERY MOVE AND PUT NEGATIVE COMMENTS IN MY HEAD. AND BETWEEN 2014-2015 I ALSO HELPED TAKE CARE OF MY FATHER THAT WAS SICK WITH LUNG CANCER. SO MY LIFE REVOLVED ALOT AROUND HELPING MY FAMILY AND THE GYM WAS ON THE BACK BURNER. BUT I HAVE TO SAY THAT HAVE PEOPLE TO SUPPORT YOU WHEN YOU ARE ON A WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY IS HELPFUL, ALSO MY PERSONAL TRAINER HAS BEEN THERE FOR ME SINCE DAY ONE, THROUGH HIGHS AND LOWS.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
YES I DID HIT WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS. TO OVERCOME THEM I HAD TO RECALCULATE MY NUTRITION AND SEE IF I WASN’T EATING PROPERLY. ALSO I CHANGED UP MY EXERCISE ROUTINE. MY TRAINER DID THE SAM WHEN IT CAME TO CHANGING UP MY WORKOUTS TO HELP ME OVERCOME THE PLATEAUS.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I STARTED AT THE GYM IN APRIL 2012 AND I STARTED WORKING WITH MY PERSONAL TRAINER SAM ABOUT 4 MONTHS AFTER THAT. EVER SINCE SAM AND I STARTED WORKING TOGETHER IN 8/2012, MY WEGHT HAS BEEN COMING OFF LIKE CRAZY

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
-MY PANTS ARE LOOSER
-I HAVE MORE ENDURANCE
-PEOPLE ARE NOTICING MY WEIGHT LOSS
-I HAVE MORE ENERGY
-I CAN LIFT HEAVIER

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
MY DIET NOW IS BASED OFF OF PROPER FATS, CARBS AND PROTEIN IN MY MEALS. NOW I PORTION MY MEALS OUT AND EAT 6 SMALL MEALS A DAY. I CUT OUT SUGARS AND ALCOHOL. BACK WHEN I WAS HEAVIER AT WORK I WOULD EAT FAST FOOD OR OUT OF VENDING MACHINE. NOW I TAKE MY FOOD AD PREPARE IT FOR THE SHOFT I AM ABOUT TO WORK.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
MY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY WHEN I WA HEAVIER WAS SLEEP AND THEN SIT ON THE COUCH AND WATCH TV AND EAT. I HAD NO MOTIVATION TO EVEN GO TO THE GYM, NOW MY GYM IS MY TIME MY STRESS RELIEF AND MY TIME TO SHINE. I WORKOUT 7 DAYS A WEEK AND DO AT LEAST 2 DAYS WITH MY TRAINER. MY WORKOUTS RANGE FROM MUSCLE SPECIFIC TO JUST CARDIO AND AB WORK.

  4. SEEK ASSISTANCE FROM A PERSONAL TRAINER OR A FRIEND TO KEEP YOU MOTIVATED
  5. SET SMALL AND FREQUENT WEIGHT LOSS GOALS TO KEEP YOU MOTIVATED
