NAME : Diana
BEFORE WEIGHT : 330
AFTER WEIGHT : 178
POUNDS LOST : 152

WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?

I began developing a weight problem when I was about eight years old. Being raised up in South Louisiana, almost every meal included Rice; Mashed Potatoes and Gravy; Grits; or Macaroni and Cheese. These types of foods were everyday staples of life in Louisiana. We all ate abundantly, and because of the sweltering heat and humidity, after eating dinner, it was usually too hot to go outside and play. Therefore, my family and I never exercised. So, that sedentary lifestyle contributed to my weight gain.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I would have to say that being overweight as a child, and later as an adolescent, caused me to have very low self-esteem. I literally hated the way that I looked.
However, my weight really ballooned out of control when, as an adult, I had to stop working, in order to care for my ailing Mother, who was fighting a battle with Breast Cancer. The stress of being her sole caregiver, while raising my two young daughters, began taking a toll on me. Therefore, I turned to food to comfort me. By the time that my Mother passed away, I weighed 330 pounds.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
In 2009, my Doctor informed me that I had contracted Breast Cancer. So, after undergoing surgery, and surviving my own Battle with Breast Cancer, I finally went into remission. Then, my Doctor told me that Obesity contributes to several forms of Breast Cancer. He advised me to lose weight, in order to help to prevent the return of the Cancer. However, it wasn’t until I started having Sleep Apnea, Shortness of Breath, and experiencing severe pain in my legs and lower back, that I finally had had enough. One morning in 2011, I woke up, and began my Weight Loss Journey.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I gradually started reading articles and searching the internet for information on clean and healthy eating. I also educated myself about how beneficial exercise was to me. So, I began eating clean, and then I later joined a neighborhood gym, and began going regularly.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
Almost immediately, I started to notice changes in the way that my clothes fit me. Within two months, my husband and family also began to notice how good I was looking.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I initially had to overcome having Breast Cancer, and the emotional roller coaster that comes with receiving that type of diagnosis. I also found it very difficult to give up sugary sweets, as that was my weakness. However, after facing my challenges head on, I was finally on my way to “Onederland”. I happily rejoiced when the first number on my scale finally began with the number One, and no longer began with the number Three.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I am a wife, the mother of two adult daughters, and four adorable young grandchildren. The thought of leaving them behind was just too much to bear. Therefore, I became more determined than ever to fight hard, to overcome Breast Cancer and Obesity, and to win the Battle of the bulge.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes, I did hit plateaus occasionally. Therefore, I eliminated red meat from my diet; I began exercising on a daily basis; and I also began drinking a Protein Shake, as a meal replacement for Breakfast.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lost the first 100 pounds within one year. After that, my weight loss began to slow down a bit. So, it took me another six to eight months to lose the remaining 52 pounds. I consider this a Journey, and I feel that I must remain vigilant for the rest of my life, in order not to regain the lost weight.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Yes, I went from wearing a size 26/28 slacks, to now I can fitting comfortably into a size 8 slacks.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Before beginning my weight loss Journey, I would regularly feast on Fried Chicken, Hamburgers, French Fries, Cakes and Do-Nuts. I ate loads of fast food, and sugary desserts. I rarely ate fruits and vegetables.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When I was Obese, I never exercised at all. Since losing the weight, I exercise on a daily basis, beginning at 5:00 a.m. every morning. I now feel sort of odd whenever I miss a day of exercising. I absolutely love the way that exercising makes me look and feel. My body is very toned now, and I feel and look better now, at age 52, than I did when I was in my 20’s.
