WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?

I was always chubby as a child. Through high school and college I was “thick” not obese but a hefty girl. It was after college when I starting working that it became easy to stop at drive thrus to grab a meal or two. I ate many donuts on route to the hospital, like 1/2 dozen at a sitting.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was still active and played sports but I hated how fat I had become. But I couldn’t stop, I couldn’t lose the weight. Then I had 3 kids and I just became a mom. They were my focus , not myself.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
In 2010 I met a surgeon in the US who agreed to do a revision RNY on me. I had weight loss surgery in 1998 which eventually failed and caused me health issues, then had it reversed in 2008 which resulted in a 100lb weight gain in 1 year. Not 1 doctor in Canada would touch me but Dr Graber agreed to do the surgery and it was a life saver.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
Once I had the RNY I learned to eat protein first, veggies second and low carb. Then once the weight started coming off I found myself in the gym.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
My weight loss was immediate but I did stall many times. I knew that I had to eat more protein and less carbs and move my body. So I did

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I had lots of family support and I spent a lot of time exercising as this became my focus.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I never ever wanted to give up. I constantly post flashback pics to social media to remind me where I was, I’ll never be her again

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Plateaus are hard, they get into your head. Make you think that’s it, I’m done. I just use it as fuel to light my fire. I drink more water, decrease carbs and focus on clean foods

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It’s took me 2 years to get to a good weight, then I was able to have plastic surgery to remove excess skin, tummy tuck and breast lift. I’m 6 years post op and still treat my life as a lifestyle, always focusing on eating clean and exercising

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Yes!
I started running , doing a couch to 5k, about 6 months after my surgery. I ran my first 5k in 2012 2 years post op , then I ran a half marathon 2 months later.
Fast forward to 2016 and I completed a gruelling hot 50 MILE trail race!!!! I went from Fat to Ultra Marathoner!

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My focus is on clean whole foods. I’m doing a lot of lifting now and I have a coach. I count my macros and focus on proteins, carbs and healthy fats. I eat a lot of chicken,eggs, veggies, fish and avocados. I snack on rice cakes and nuts now instead of chocolate bars and donuts!

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I was active when heavy but now I’m a beast in the gym . I lift with the “big boys” and spend lots of time in the squat rack. My goal now is to build muscle. My weight has gone up but gaining muscle mass is so much better that fat.

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Eat clean whole food – if it was made in a factory it isn’t food
  2. Drink water, not gallons but enough to keep you hydrated.
  3. Move your body! Baby steps , just move it and get off the couch
  4. Find someone who motivates you, either a real person or someone on social media. Reach out to them , ask for help
  5. Don’t quit! Yes it’s hard , yes it sucks, yes some days you hurt and don’t wanna do it – but suck it up and you will feel better afterwards . Trust me
