WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I’ve always struggled with my weight, as young as 12 years old, and reached 200lbs in my early 20’s due to leaving home and living off of fast food. At 23 I became pregnant and gained another 80lbs. Although I was eating much healthier for myself and my unborn child, I was eating way too much! I literally took ‘eating for two’ to heart!

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I’m fairly tall, almost 5’9″, so I never felt really overweight till I got pregnant. My weight gain during this time happened so fast I was left with stretch marks all over my body! My stomach, my inner thighs, my arm pits, and the backs of my knees were covered. I was so ashamed of my body! I never wore shorts, let alone a bathsuit, from age 20-30! I’ve always had thicker hips, thighs, legs before my weight gain that I felt insecure about. My stretch marks just amplified those insecurities.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I was determined to lose weight shortly after having my son almost 13 years ago. I lost my first 80lbs in a very unhealthy way, looking back at it now. I skipped meals, took pills to suppress my appetite, drank concoctions that claimed to aid weightloss, etc. When I reached my pre-pregnancy weight again I plateaued and no gimmicks were helping any more!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
In 2006 I discovered the GI Diet and decided I would completely change my diet and try lose my remaining weight by eating. Eating the right foods often! I lost another 50lbs within the year and was 150lbs! The lightest I’d been since I was 13 years old!

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
The one major downside to my weighloss on this diet was that I focused only on my diet, and never exercised! The weight was gone but the loose skin and stretch marks remained! I felt more insecure than ever! I felt so good in clothes but the thought of being naked brought me to tears. Slowly, over the next five years, the weight was gained back! Every time I reached 200 lbs I’d panic and start ‘dieting’ again! Only now I was plateauing at 180lbs. I tried the GI Diet again but it didn’t work for me the second time, so I tried every fad diet/gimmick out there. My son, Connor, has non-verbal Autism so his care was primary concern for many years!

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I didn’t have any No Scale Victories till I joined Fit Girls Guide and was encouraged to document and share my journey with my fit-sisters! I’ve had many since starting and losing my last 40lbs!

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My diet has completely changed! After losing 40lbs with FGG I wasn’t seeing many major gains and decided I would try a plant-based diet. I lost a few more pounds but more importantly I gained definition I never thought possible!

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I did NOTHING when I was heavier!! Now I take daily walks with my family, go biking, and workout from the comfort of my home as often as possible!

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Love yourself every step of the way! This is your journey and nobody elses!
  2. Never quit! If you’re tired, rest! But start again! Always start again!!
  3. Drink your water!!! I cannot stress this one enough!!
  4. Don’t skip meals and meal prep as often as you can!
  5. Missing a workout or eating something unhealthy isn’t the end of the world! You’re human!
