WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I was always the token “chubby” kid my whole childhood, I was always the biggest girl at dancing and the biggest in my classes at school. As a teenager I got bigger & bigger, I used to eat large portions mainly due to boredom & comfort eating.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My weight really impacted my self confidence, I felt unattractive around boys, too self conscious to go to the beach or music festivals with my friends because I couldn’t bear the thought of having someone see my body and how much I’d let myself go.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
A visit to my GP to get a regular health check became quite surprising when the doctor sat me down to talk about my weight and the imminent risk of diabetes if I did not change my habits and focus on a healthy lifestyle. He then told me I was 280 pounds, of course I argued that I had tried every diet & there must be a medical reason for my weight gain. The GP made me realise the reality of the situation I’d eaten myself into.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
Initially I began walking only 10 minutes a day, eventually it got easy and I was able to go for longer and longer each day & My diet changed immediately as the doctor instructed. I saw a nutritionist who was able to point me in the right direction when making food & meal choices.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
6 weeks till I was able to see a noticeable change in my body
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I’ve had to overcome muscle problems, throughout my journey I’ve been attending physiotherapy to help me build more muscle & give me more support
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I wanted to give up everyday but I knew that was not going to help me, I knew if I wanted to be the person I wanted to I would have to work my ass off to become her. Everyday I would read quotes from great athletes to keep me focused and grounded
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
yes, I hit multiple throughout my journey. The only way to overcome a plateau is to keep on moving forward and work even harder.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
3 persistent years
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
yes!! I won the BOX’n’BURN competition for the SYDNEY region in FEB2016 – winning myself 5000$ prize money for losing 21% of my bodyfat percentage in just 10 weeks!
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My portions were always large and I used to be a big carb lover! you can see how it would’ve been easy to find the pounds. I was also an emotional eater, each bullying incident at school only intensified the emotional eating.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I never liked working out, I hated sweating. The most physical activity I would’ve done would’ve been walking short distances
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- cut out all sodas and drinks – stick to water and herbal teas
- move daily – even if its only a 20minute walk around the block
- get a good night sleep – you need aim to sleep 8 hours each night to allow your body time to recover
- get support – get yourself a trainer or someone who is passionate about helping people achieve their fitness goals, I found this really encouraging
- keep at it & don’t give up. Giving up doesn’t get results!
