WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I was always the “big girl” as far as I can remember. When I was in grade school and throughout my high school years, I was one of the big kids. This theme continued throughout my adult life until I was 32 years of age.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My weight loss affected my health, first and foremost. I was diagnosed with hypertension ( which I refused to take medication for) and I suffered from severe migranes, and fibroids. I was happy some of the time but for the most part I did develop low self-esteem, became depressed and withdrawn. I also would emotionally eat and did indulge in excessive drinking to cope. I remember one time an friend and I tried to get on a roller coaster ride and we could not fit. We held the line up trying to get the bar to fasten but was unable to, so we had to get out of the line and we could not ride on the rollercoaster.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
The turning point for me was when I graduated college. I receive my degree in 2012( something I though I would never complete) and I was so excited about this new journey in my life. So I though to myself..hey if I can do this to better myself,I sure can start to take care of my health. So I stepped out on faith and started my weight loss journey. I initially started eliminating items from my diet and starting walking 30mins
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I initially started by eliminating foods from my diet such as soda, drinking more water and starting walking 30mins a day. I was able to lose 10lbs in a month. I started to get bored and wanted to workout with a group. I joined a gym but was intimidated by all the machines and stopped going. One day I was at home watching “The Biggest Loser” on television and I knew I had to go on the show to lose weight. So I went on line to do research and found a local workout group called The Biggest Loser Memphis ( at the time). I was able to find the group’s Facebook page and asked to join. I received an immediate response back and was asked to come to one of the workouts in the community and I went. I went and I loved everything about it. The fellowship and working out with people who were on the same journey I was on was priceless. I continued to workout for about 5 months and lost weight. I stopped working out due to personal issues but I did not let that hold me down. I came back to the group now called Fit Nation, Inc and the rest is history!!
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I started to see results within the first month of changing to a healthy lifestyle.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I had to overcome self-doubt and changing my thinking.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Yes!!! I wanted to give up! What kept me going is my WHY!
I have many why’s, but the one that is most important for me, is allowing people to see that it can be done. I am no one special. I just kept going. Did I fall? Yes, several times, but I didn’t stay there. Anything work having is worth fighting for!
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I did hit plateaus. I overcame them switching up my workouts and closely tracking what could’ve created the plateau and adjust my goals accordingly.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It took about 1 year.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Yes! I gained self confidence. I don’t have any hypertension or other health issues as before and I gained some awesome friends. I just feel better overall.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Now I eat plenty of fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, lean meats and I drink plenty of water. I still have my snacks but I opt for healthier snacks versus the unhealthy options such as Doritos and cakes. When I was heavier, I ate fried foods almost everyday, I did not eat fresh vegetables nor did I drink water.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
When I was heavier, my only physical activity consumed was at work. Now I workout 5 days a week and some days twice a day. I do cardio and resistance training.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- If possible get an accountability partner. This helped for me especially on days I didn’t feel like working out or of I started to struggle on the journey.
- Meal prepping helped me so much. If you are not able to meal prep, eat a hearty breakfast before starting your work day and have healthy snacks and water with you at all times, if possible. This can help with avoiding the snack machine, going out to eat and skipping the fast food restaurants.
