WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
For as long as I can remember I’ve been overweight. Food became my best friend, but ultimately became my enemy.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My doctor diagnosed me with diabetes, high blood pressure, anemia, and kidney disease. I was slowly killing myself with my food choices.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
After being put on 8 different medications, and being told I wouldn’t be able to have kids, I knew I had to make a change.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
My doctor referred me to a nutritionist where I learned about portion sizes and making better food choices. I started by making small changes, increasing my water intake, and walking everyday.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I saw results the first week but my journey was a rollercoaster ride or loses and gains. Consistency was definitely key for me.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Changing my self talk. To this day it’s still one of the hardesr things for me. I’ve had to learn to speak to myself the way I would speak to my children. Lovingly! Instead of beating myself up for having bad days, I’ve learned to say, it’s okay, tomorrow you will do better.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
There were many days I wanted to throw in the towel. Seeing results and being taken off meds because of weightloss kept me going.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Many! I just knew how much better I felt when I ate healthier and exercised. I also changed things up in my exercise routine.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It look me about 5 years to lose my first 75 pounds, and about 2 years for my last 50 pounds.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I’ve gone from morbidly obese and hardly able to walk and a size 26/28, to winning a medal for third place in a 5k and a size 10/12. I also have a 7yr old daughter, and 3 step daughters who do races with me. It feels great to lead by example! 🙂
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I eat about 6 smaller meals a day now, about 1600-1800 calories and about a gallon of water. When I was heavier I probably ate between 3000-5000 calories a day and a 6-pack of soda.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
My only exercise when I was heavier was walking from the couch to the refigerator. Now I workout at least 5 days a week and do about one 5k a month.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Don’t beat yourself up on bad days, we all have them. Speak to yourself the way you would your child or spouse or family member.
- It doesn’t matter how hard or fast you go, so long as you go. Find exercise you enjoy whether it’s housework (not!), crossfit, running, workout dvd’s….just move!
- Drink water!
- Lose the scale. Judge your progress on how you feel and how your clothes fit. The scale does not define you!
- Have a good support system. Lean on friends and family members. You’re not in this alone!
