WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I have been “big for my age” since about the 6th grade, not considered obese til around 20 years old. That is when I started to put on weight and over the next 8 years I reached my highest weight of 332 lbs at 28 years old.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My weight was controlling my life. I couldn’t be the mother, wife or person I wanted to be and knew God meant for me to be. Every day life was a struggle and I was living on the sidelines. I couldn’t play with my kids like I should, go places with my family and do things with them without being out of breath or fearing fitting in seats, rides, etc.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
In December of 2012, we had family pictures taken of us. I couldn’t believe what I saw. I knew I wore size 22 jeans and a 3x-4x shirt, but seeing it was another thing. I was in denial about my size and my scale wouldn’t weigh me. It maxed out at 325 lbs. I knew that day that I was done. I was done being sick and tired. I was done telling my kids, “I can’t.”, “Not now” or “Maybe later”. I was done with every pill, shot and fad diet I had ever tried that didn’t work. I was 28 years old and heading down a very dangerous path. I had made up my mind that I was going to have to work hard, do it right with healthy food and exercise, and ask God to help me. I was going to find something sustainable that I could do for the rest of my life, and do it. This time was different and this time was for real.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started walking outside, while the kids played at the park or on our road. I aimed for a mile. That first one took me 23:06. I thought I was going to die.

In February 2013, we bought a treadmill and I walked 30 min a day/6 days a week. We stopped eating so much fast food and processed food. We started eating more whole foods: lean meats like chicken and turkey, fruits and veggies. I also stopped drinking soda and drank only water, half my body weight in ounces.

In August 2013 after following many running/weight loss pages on Facebook, I decided to try running! I would run from one electric pole to the next and then walk, I didn’t always make it but I never gave up! It took over 2 months before I was able to run a whole mile and my time was around 15 minutes! Now a year from my first mile ran and my fastest mile is 9:54!

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
By March 2013 my scale could weigh me! I was down 15 lbs from my heaviest weight known of 332 lbs to 317 lbs! I stayed losing steadily 5-8 lbs a month and by September 2013, I had lost 50 lbs! On my own, but with God’s grace!! I had never done that before!

By my one year “fitversary” I had lost 85 lbs! Going on to have lost 120 lbs total in 20 months!

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
The hardest part for me was food. I was a renowned “starch-atarian”. Loving fried foods, chips, potatoes, mac-n-cheese and pizza. I have found healthier alternatives to most of my favorite foods and don’t miss what I can’t substitute, once you cut out a lot of the junk the cravings stop and it doesn’t taste the same the next time you try it! I practice moderation though, if I want something I have it, in moderation. Instead of our family of 5 sharing TWO large pizzas, we share ONE. I have baked or veggie chips, with occasional unhealthy ones. I swapped potatoes for sweet potatoes. You don’t have to eat just salad, there are tons of options! Shop the perimeter of the grocery store and skip the processed aisles!

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I have honestly never wanted to give up. I don’t always want to workout or eat healthy, but when I mess up, I start over. Not the next day, Monday or month- the very next moment! Start by making small, healthier choices and slowly, a little turns into a lot! I remember how miserable I felt at 332 lbs. I remember how hard every day life was. I remember so I never go back. No food, drink, addiction will ever replace how good healthy feels.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I hit a plateau probably every month! I take pictures often and measure. Some days I still see the old me in the mirror but all I have to do is a picture comparison and that usually takes care of that. The scale doesn’t tell the whole story!

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It has taken 20 months to lose 120 lbs. It is a slow process but so worth it!! I would like to lose around 30 more but ultimately I want to be fit and healthy, whatever the scale says!

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Tons!!

The girl who couldn’t run a mile in high school even, is a half-marathoner and loves distance running!
I’m in a size 10-12 from a 22 and a medium/large shirt from a 3x-4x!
My outside is finally starting to match my inside! While I was a happy person always, even heavy, I am much more relaxed and confident now.
I can go all day and rarely tire.
I walk into a room smiling and sure of myself.
I no longer fear trying things out of fear of failure or embarrassment!
My Journey has brought me closer to God, that’s the best victory in this world!

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Oh way healthier!! I eat so many healthy, colorful foods and my tastes have broadened! Cutting out junk means that REAL food tastes real GOOD!

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I couldn’t climb a flight of stairs or run for 30 seconds before! Now I run miles and then go about daily chores like it’s nothing!

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Never be afraid to start over. Sometimes I do daily or even more than once a day. All that matters is that you try again! You don’t need a Monday or a new month/year. Just make your next choice healthier and don’t guilt or berate yourself.
  2. Love yourself. No, it’s not a cliche. You have to love yourself to get to where you want to be. Losing weight alone won’t make you happy. We are fearfully and wonderfully made, act like it!
  3. Take pictures and measure!! The scale doesn’t tell the whole story! One month I lost .6 lbs but 8 inches all over and a size! You don’t have to show anyone, but you will be glad you have them.
  4. Download a calorie counter/ food log/ activity log and use it! You need to know what you’re consuming to fully grasp what you need to change. Once you see how much or even how little you are eating, you can better start working towards your goals. I use myfitnesspal app and it has been a great tool!
  5. Last but certainly not least: Invite God along on your journey. You will never walk alone. I’ve tried losing weight so many times but until I asked Him to come with me and give me strength, it never worked. I give Him all the glory for my success and know with Him I will surpass my expectations, I already have. He has great plans for us, they are plans to prosper and not harm us!I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13
