NAME : Mary Lou
BEFORE WEIGHT : 297
AFTER WEIGHT : 177
POUNDS LOST : 120

WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
Around the age of 12. We never had enough food growing up then at the age of 11 I was put in foster care. All of a sudden there was food every meal! So I ate like I was making up for lost time.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
The typical things; low self esteem, feeling of no self worth, anger towards myself for lack of will power.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
Within a week of each other, I had been Moo’d at by a stranger and told I should call Jenny Craig. I was done.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
Slowly, I had tried losing weight what felt like 100 times before, so I felt to be successful I had to get rid of the “all or nothing” mentality. I didn’t set a goal weight, I just wanted to be healthy.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
About 6 weeks.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
At the time I was working 7 days a week with an Autistic boy in his home, and he and his parents literately ate out every meal, and typically it was fast food type of places. That was a huge hurdle for me.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
No, it was like a switch had flipped when that man moo’d at me and all his buddies laughed. I never considered quitting as an option.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I was fortunate in that I lost pretty steadily the entire journey.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
From September 2013 to April 2014, I lost 120 lbs. It’s not typical I know, but I was consistent and never waivered.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Several! Being able to hold a Plank for 4 minutes when I had started at 15 seconds. Being able to fit my entire body into one pants leg of my “Before” jeans. Having the ability to say, “No” to trigger foods, fitting on the rides at Six Flags, wearing a two piece bathing suit for the first time EVER.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I eat very little red meat and fruit and veggies everyday. Before, fries and burgers were staples in my diet.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I live in the South where it’s VERY hot and humid in the Summer; before I couldn’t stand being outside more than walking to and from my car. Now, while still hot, it doesn’t stop me from doing things I want to do.

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Flood your FB/IG with others on the same journey!
  2. Buy a water jug that hold your 8 glasses of water you should have a day, and drink it EVERY SINGLE DAY. Don’t drink your calories.
  3. Track your food! I use My Fitness Pal.
  4. Start slow if you need to. Going cold turkey isn’t always best; cut unhealthy foods/drinks out a little at a time so you’re less likely to binge.
  5. Stay off the scale! I’ve only weighed twice and that’s to know where I started and how much I’d lost. You’re more than a number, and if you lift weights, you’re likely to weigh more than if you didn’t, BUT be SMALLER.
