WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?

I had been over weight my entire life. I ballooned around at 4 and never stopped!

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
My father lived with and died from weight related illnesses. (Diabetic, congestive heart failure, double amputee, blood pressure). Although i never found my personal weight to be a hinderance, i knew I was headed down the same path at my father. I was literally going to eat myself to death.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
The death of my father changed my life. He was my best friend and my confidant. When he died, my entire universe shifted. I was so angry when the reality of the situation set it; if he had changed his habits and taken better care of himself, he would literally still be here. It made me sick to know that one day, I was going to make the people that cared about me feel the same way. The thought of people standing over my grave, like they did my father’s, shaking their heads saying things like, “we told her she needed to change her ways” or “if she had just watched what she ate..” made me disgusted. People literally felt as though my dad chose food over more time with his friends and family . It hurt to finally realize they were right.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I examined my entire life. Often times obesity isnt the issue in itself, its the result of much bigger problems. I severed toxic relationships, cut people off that didnt improve my quality of life, learned to say no to others and yes to myself. My weight loss didnt start with physical change, it started with mental change. Eventually I was in a place mentally and emotionally where i was ready to continue improving myself. Next stop was the physical. I started walking every night and made better food choices. The changes were small at first, but evolved over time.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
The first few months yielded results for me. I cut the preservatives and stuck to the cardio and the weight started to fall off!

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I needed to get out of my own way. I needed to believe in myself and look long term. So many times before did i focus on short term results; when they didnt pan out, i quit. This time i looked further down the road. It kept me focused and committed, and i was able to look past short term “failures” or slightly missed goal milestones. When I would weigh in slightly over my goal, i adapted the mind set that “this will be trivial a month from now. Dont sweat it”

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Never. I wasnt going out like that.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Yes! I would get stuck fluctuating between a 5lb range sometimes and it would be super frusterating. But I buckled down and stepped up the cardio, removed “cheat meals” for a few weeks in a row and got back on track. Remember the whole time that, “in a month from now, this will be trivial”

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
Next month (october) will officially be a year. Down 118 lbs.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Shopping in regular stores! Borrowing clothes from friends! Loving how I looked in candid photos!

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
95% all natural. The majority of the things I eat can be grown and picked! I avoid preservatives as much as possible and am super conscious of the additives/ chemicals in my food. I also havent had fast food since I started. Before I would eat anything and 95% of my died WAS processed and preservatives ridden. Fast food was a daily routine.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Honestly I was always pretty physically active. People were surprised at how much I could do as a heavy individual. I credit it to working multiple jobs at a time, being on my feet for 12 hours a day. I will tell you I enjoy being active much more now!

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Its not a diet. Its a lifestyle change. The word diet signified an end. This is your new and improved LIFE. People diet before vacations and weddings. You change your lifestyle for long term success!
  2. Nothing tastes as good as the first bite. If you are craving something, or everyone around you is eating cookies- have one! You are alive after all! But know that having 7 or 8 will be no more satisfying than just one!
  3. Stop giving up on yourself. For Godsakes; if you cant count on yourself- who can you count on?! Become your own best friend and do it together 🙂
