WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I was always the heavier kid in class, by a teenager slightly over weight but by the time I hit my early 20’s is when it all went down hill. When I say slightly over weight I weighed approx. 220lbs. In 2009 I met my husband who I loved and he loved me even more, no matter my weight – so I got comfortable like we all do. During that time we both got laid off during the recession so all we did for 2 years was eat, and of course he did not gain a pound! Doesn’t it always happen like that HAHA Between 2010-2012 is when I hit my heaviest, 292 lbs. Wow, this is the first time I am mentioning my starting weight. Back then it was the biggest secret of my life, that number could never get out. If anyone knew I would almost 300lbs would have killed me, but now its almost freeing. I knew I had to take charge if I wanted to have a happy and healthy future, so in March 2012 is when my journey began …
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was so self conscience but still didn’t care what anyone else thought of the weigh I looked.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
Honestly, one morning I just woke up and searched nutritionists in my area that accepted my insurance and booked an appointment. I have been going to her ever since then, once a month for my monthly weigh in.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
My nutritionist taught me how to eat healthy and maintain a life style that is sustainable for me. I learned how to read nutrition labels and understand what they meant. I started tracking calories on the fitnesspal app which made me realize how many calories, carbs, and sugars are in certain foods.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
This is a long slow journey, especially since I didn’t “diet”, I just changed the weigh I ate. I lost approx. 2-3lbs a month, yes a month. I always hated hearing people say that lost 4-5 a week but one thing you learn is never compare yourself with anyone else. In the long run all those little 2 to 3 lbs added up to a 110+ weight loss. You saw a big improvement after the first year for sure but at the end of the second I lost over 70lbs so it was really amazing at that point.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Challenges !? Oh boy, it would have to be exercise. I was the kid in gym class who used her asthma as an excuse not to run or do anything that would physically exert myself. I had to learn to LOVE fitness and weighing 292 who wanted to go to a gym, I was sooo intimated. I started out small and took womens only Zumba classes then gradually moved up to a very small local gym with less than 15 cardio machines. I finally felt good enough to hit the big time gyms and loved every minute of it. That’s when I really started to get into cardio and take boot camp classes. Last year around this time I decided I needed a break and took a very long one, 7 months without working out but my weight was still going down so I didn’t mind. I currently joined the gym again in the new year and have been going 2x a week.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Heck yes! There was days that I was so sick and tired of eating grilled chicken and veggies and just wanted to eat a whole cake! But in the end you have to remember why you started and get back into the game so you can continue achieving your goals.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
YUP! I’m currently going through a plateau right now and hate it. I actually had weigh in today and gained 4-5 lbs in a month. This is seriously that first time since I started this journey that I gained weight. We are going to increase my workouts, cut portions, and I’m going to start tracking my calories again for a better control on my daily intake. After 3 years, I know a plateau is normal. As long as you don’t unpack and live there you will be fine!
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I’ve been on this journey for 4 years now. I have tracked my weight loss every step of the way. The first year I lost 41lbs, the second year I lost 28lbs, and the third year 30lbs. I am currently on my fourth and most difficult year .. 15lbs and counting.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
OMG! Yes! That’s what keeps me going the most when I needed it the most. Just knowing I used to wear a size 22 pants and now I’m a size 12 – from wearing a size 2/3X shirt and now being a M is amazing.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
So so different. Back then I ate everything and anything I wanted, I truly dint care about calories or anything like that. I totally eliminated soda, now all I drink is water and seltzer is amazing because it curbs that bubbly taste. I lived on soda, I had it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert – it was truly disgusting. I ate muffins, bagels, donuts, fried foods, hamburgers, 1,000 calories sandwiches, Chinese food, pizza .. literally everything. I now eat tons and tons of veggies, all veggies are amazing. Grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, lean proteins and whole grains. I’m still working on smaller portions but I changed my eating habits 150%.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I can finally go up and down the stairs without being out of breath, and if I had to run for the train I wouldn’t die!
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Do this journey for yourself and no one else. You are all that matters and don’t judge other peoples journeys because the same things do not work for everyone.
- Allow time and patience. This is along process but it is amazing in the long run.
- Be active, do any type of activity you can, even if it is just walking around the block a few times!
