NAME : Chyann
BEFORE WEIGHT : 261
AFTER WEIGHT : 157
POUNDS LOST : 104

WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?

In my Senior year of High School, I started working at McDonald’s part time to help my mother with the family bills. I stopped all extracurricular activities and was always eating at work, the weight came on quickly.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was always pretty shy, but the added weight made it worse. I stopped making eye contact with people and avoiding social events. I was horribly uncomfortable with myself.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
The turning point didn’t come for years, after I had my son and continued a downward spiral of emotional eating. A friend of mine casually asked if I wanted to go to the gym, and as uncomfortable and embarrassed as I was, I knew that I had to make a change.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started going to the gym with a friend, mainly using the elliptical machine or walking on the treadmill. I also completely changed the way I ate and have been on pretty much the same eating plan since then. I started the couch to 5K app, and now running is my personal favorite.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
It took a few months, one day I realized that I didn’t have so much hips to rest my hands on.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I was extremely self-conscious going to the gym at first, I was surrounded by all these fit people while I could barely run 30 seconds without losing my breath.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I wanted to give up every day that first week at the gym, but I knew that the only way I was going to change was by sticking with it.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I did hit a couple and what I would do was intensify my running: doing speed intervals instead of a consistent run, and I would mix up my meal planning (same calorie and fat intake, just different things)

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It took 586 days (1 year, 7 months and 8 days) Not that I counted or anything 😉

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I had the confidence to apply for a promotion at work.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Much more fruits+veggies, lean proteins, healthy grains, and limited processed foods and refined sugar. Little to no take out.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
It is much better. I run at least 3 miles a day, 5 days a week. I will begin training for a half marathon in the upcoming weeks.

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Stick with it, even when it gets hard.
  2. Set little goals as well as big goals and treat yourself when you reach them.
  3. Find a workout buddy,
