WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I have always had issues with weight. As a child I remember always being on a “diet.” I remember eating boiled chicken and canned green beans for dinner and lettuce for lunch. The lunch lady hated to charge me full lunch price because literally all I got was lettuce.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I was always known as the fat one in the my family. It seemed to me that people were always watching what I was eating because in their minds I always needed to be on a diet. When I had my daughter I gained 100 pounds and gestational diabetes. I knew what this meant for my future. It meant that I would follow in my father’s footsteps, a fat diabetic.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
About 5 years ago, I was officially diagnosed as a diabetic and I also had high blood pressure. I was put on medicine but not insulin. I am not sure why but because I was on insulin, I was not in danger. It wasn’t until my appointment with my doctor on July 28, 2014 that my doctor said the thing I was dreading the most “it’s time to start insulin.” My heart fell into my stomach and I begged him for 3 months. Give me 3 months to get my act together. He agreed to this and changed my medicines. I was thrilled to be given these 3 months. I was going to show him that I could do this.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
Because I was a diabetic, I started doing Atkins and I was strict. I started at 20 carbs a day. I lost 40 pounds and my doctor was thrilled. Yes, I lost 40 pounds but I stopped losing weight. I then started eating clean and slowing incorporated carbs back into my diet. I also got the help of a personal trainer and started slow with 2 – 3 workouts a week. Overtime, I increased my workout frequency and added jogging to my routine. I used the couch to 5k app.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
Two months after I started working out and eating clean is when I started seeing the results. I saw the definition in my arms and how toned my legs were getting.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
Learning to eat to live not live to eat was very hard for me. I give myself 1 cheat meal and dessert of my choice every other week. My new life style was very hard on my husband too and he would encourage me to miss a work out or have a dessert with him. I finally had to put my foot down and just tell him that he could not do that to me. He has respected this part of my life from then on. I love working out with a personal trainer but that became too costly with my daughter in college and my son turning 16 so with a friends help I checked into the fitness programs at Beachbody.com and fell in love with the concept of the 21 Day Fix. This way I can workout at home and save my money that I was paying for a personal trainer. I loved it so much I became a coach with Beachbody and help other individuals lose weight.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
Losing weight is tough and I do have a bad day and sometimes days but I have made a commitment to stay healthy and stay off the medicine. I just keep reminding myself that I AM WORTH IT.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I hit a plateau when I was doing low carb. After losing the first 40 pounds I had to re-evaluate my diet and decided to incorporate working out and clean eating. I have hit plateaus since but nearly as long. If I feel I plateau closer to my goal weight I can recover more quickly. It is usually as simple as changing up my food or exercise. Keeping my body guessing keeps me from plateaus.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I hit my goal weight June 2015, 11 months after I began.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
The first time I ran 3 miles without having to stop was a great day for me. I will probably never be a half marathon runner or even a 10k runner but now its all about how I can increase my speed.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
Before changing my diet I did not count anything and rarely drank water. I was the person that would order two meals and two drinks so that the person at the drive through window did know both meals were for me. I would go through the ice cream place order a large milkshake and a large cone and eat the cone before I got back to work and drank my shake. Now my diet consists of a overnight oats or protein shake (my favorite is 1 scoop chocolate protein powder, coffee ice, and a frozen banana) and 4 small meals. I also make it a point to drink at a minimum of 1 gallon of water.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I was a true couch potato and now I rarely sit down. I just go go go. I love the energy I have now.

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Stop drinking carbonated drinks, if it’s hard, just cut back a little at a time until you can stop entirely.
  2. Add exercise slowly. I would advise getting a personal trainer if you can afford it even if it’s just a couple of sessions to learn proper form. I feel that if I would have went at it from the get go, going from not working out to working out everyday, I would have gave up a long time ago. No need to burn yourself out.
  3. Drink water and build your self up until your urine is almost clear.
  4. Have a scheduled cheat day. Knowing when that day is will help you stay on track knowing that you will get a reward for working so hard.
  5. If you deprive yourself of something and all you can do is think about it. Just have it and get it out of your system. Sometimes you will end up eating a lot of other things that may not be that bad for you but you eat too much of it because you are craving something else.
