WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?
I have always been heavy since birth. Looking over my photos throughout the years I was always thicker than most in my age group.
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
Weight for me was a method of stopping my existence. I allowed it to be my comforter to not try and to really face the issues I had. I noticed that I would use my weight to not go hard and allowed it to be the reason I was alone.
Now after losing 100lbs and then gain some back I notice that it plagues me from pushing hard again and makes me ashamed of who I am.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
I have always been on some sort of diet since I was in 3rd grade as kids are cruel. After I graduated college in 2011, I wanted to date and be seen so I thought I would lose the weight so I could finally be allowed into society.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I started out going to the gym 3 times a week and then bumped to 2 times a day for 3 days a week. I also stopped eating junk food and only would drink water.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
It took a few months for me to see some noticeable weight loss. It didn’t come real until I almost lost my undies while in a dress. I didn’t want to get new clothes including undergarments until I was at goal weight.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I have overcome a lot of things in my life from growing up in an abusive drug using parents in the hood. I was always seen as weird as I didn’t follow the beat of most so for me the only challenge was me seeing myself as worthy of losing weight and more importantly taking care of myself.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
I have taken a hiatus from focusing on losing weight as it becomes hard when you have to re-lose weight. But since Beyonce says a winner never quits on themselves I will keep on running and lifting weights.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
When I would hit a weight loss plateau I would really examine my food intake or see if it’s time for me to introduce a more challenging workout. A few times I had to give myself a rest as I would go to the gym 5-6 times a week.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
It took over a year to lose but 6 months to regain.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
Being motivated enough to obtain my indoor cycle certification was major to me. I still desire to teach cycle once I lose weight as I know most gyms desire a certain look.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
After losing weight my diet consisted of lots of veggies, chicken breast, and water. Now as I return to the weight loss path, my diet is still veggies and chicken. I also introduced myself to the world of raw juicing and smoothies. I love them as I have digestive issues that limit my abilities to eat my fav veggies.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
At my highest weight, I didn’t move without driving. I would become winded really quickly. I didn’t want to be around anything physically. After losing weight and even now I love to move from the gym or even just parking my car really far and walking.
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Advice: Never give any cares about what others will say about you. I find it hilarious that many are surprised I love yoga, green smoothies, and indoor cycle.
- Water is your friend. I found that once I increased my water intake it make workout much easier.
- Don’t get caught up in the social media foolishness! When I lost weight I thought I would look like one of those girls who had the small waist and big butt. I have neither no matter how small I may get. Love your body as it is.
