WHEN DID YOU START DEVELOPING A WEIGHT PROBLEM?

I have been overweight since I was a young child. By age 10 I was eating myself to nearly puking at many meals and emotionally ate when I was sad or made fun of for my weight. My mom associated beauty with thinness and deeply affected my confidence as an overweight child.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?
I felt very unconfident for most of my life and my lack of self love led me to depression, abuse of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes plus toxic relationships. I hated myself but couldn’t pin point why.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?
After I gave birth to my 5th baby I hit a brick wall emotionally, mentally and physically. I was 70 lbs overweight, depressed and had suicidal thoughts. One day, like a bright light turning on, I realized I severly lacked self love and therefore had neglected myself in all aspects.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I simply started by walking 5 minutes and incorporating a vegetable into my lunch every single day. I started so small in changing my bad habits that it was nearly impossible to fail. I gradually added weight lifting into my routine with only doing a few moves for 10-15 min 3x per week and also incorporating veggies into breakfast too. I never counted calories but just ate healthy food, lots of veggies and water and stopped eating when satisfied.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?
I started seeing very small results in a month but by three months all of a sudden my clothes were looser, my depression had completely disappeared and I felt so strong and energetic! The muscles that are popping up are insane and I am no longer in maternity clothes.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?
I have a major sweet tooth so I have had to set up once per week treat nights on Fridays and once per month we do a family ice cream night. I look forward to my treats and never feel deprived because I allow myself to live life!

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?
There were many workouts where I felt so weak and literally cried the whole session! But I thought of all the success stories I’ve seen on Instagram and it was highly motivational in those moments. I also remembered what it felt like to have complete hopelessness and no self love and I refused to go back to that dark place.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I haven’t necessarily hit any plateaus other than battling my dang sweet tooth!

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?
I lift heavy weights and am gaining muscle so I haven’t lost a ton of weight, only about 10 pounds. But I compare pictures and know I am losing lots of fat!

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?
I recently bought my first pair of non maternity jeans at Maurice’s, I was able to carry a fussy three year old and a baby carseat all at once down the block and didn’t get tired or winded, I laugh so much now and feel peaceful in mind and heart! I have lots of energy to play with my kids and never take a nap.

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I used to eat lots of fast food, sweets and processed food. Now I eat a lot veggies, protein, fruit, nuts and water. I rarely if ever eat fast food and rarely drink alcohol.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER?
I am active most days and feel highly energetic! I used to sit around a lot and now I am always moving.

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Love yourself first and your motivation, discipline and inspiration will follow!
  2. Eat veggies at every meal!
  3. Do not call it a CHEAT meal/day. Cheat implies negativity and “bad” in your mind. Call it a TREAT!!
  4. Have a support person or group who can hold you accountable!
  5. Start smaller than you think! Don’t make a million changes in one week. Gradually make changes over the course of a month(s) and year! This is a LIFESTYLE not a fad that is temporary!
